Trump says US being 'very careful' about hantavirus outbreak — but his power 'somewhat limited' to quash

On Monday, President Trump addressed concerns regarding the hantavirus outbreak, which has spread among passengers on a South Atlantic cruise ship, affecting individuals from various countries. Trump assured the nation that the United States is taking every precaution in response to the situation.

He emphasized that the Andes strain of the hantavirus is significantly more challenging to transmit than COVID-19. “This virus has been around for a while, and we have a good understanding of it,” Trump remarked from the Oval Office. He expressed confidence that the situation is manageable, stating, “All I can do is what a president is able to do, which, admittedly, has its limits, but it appears this virus is not easily spread.”

Trump further elaborated, “In many respects, it’s quite difficult to transmit. We have coexisted with this virus for many years, and we believe we are well-prepared to handle it. We are exercising great caution, and Nebraska, in particular, has excelled in isolating US passengers returning from the cruise.”
