In his findings, Mueller confirmed that Russia had interfered in the election, primarily through social media campaigns, with the aim of aiding Trump.

Although the investigation did not result in any charges against Trump, Mueller stopped short of declaring him fully exonerated.

Mueller’s family shared on Saturday that the former director, originally from New York, passed away at 81 years old.

“With deep sadness, we are sharing the news that Bob passed away last night. His family asks that their privacy be respected,” Mueller’s family said in a statement shared to social media.

Mueller had been suffering from Parkinson’s disease, though his cause of death has not been announced.
