COTTENDALE, Ala. (WIAT) — A 39-year-old man was shot and killed in the Cottondale community early Friday morning.

Deputies with the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home on 19th St. E around 3:00 a.m. on reports of a shooting, and discovered Cornelius Darnell Witherspoon shot to death inside a vehicle near the home.

Captain Jack Kennedy, with Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, said Witherspoon was staying at the home alongside his girlfriend and her children. Witnesses told authorities Witherspoon and a son of the girlfriend were involved in a argument that escalated into a shooting. The son, unidentified but charged as an adult, is facing a charge of capital murder.

Due to the age of the suspect, the sheriff’s office is not releasing any further information regarding their identity.
