Turning Point USA event at University of New Mexico ends with two arrests and a string of charges

Two men were arrested Monday at the University of New Mexico after allegedly plotting to throw objects at people attending a Turning Point USA event.

Kevin Castro and Harrison Magnus were taken into custody by the University of New Mexico Police Department after attending a Turning Point USA gathering on campus, KRQE reported.

Court documents did not identify the event by name. However, the university’s TPUSA chapter held a “Prove Me Wrong” event that day featuring Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America.

Video shared online by the Turning Point USA chapter shows Magnus appearing to shout at the crowd as police officers escorted him away in handcuffs.

According to court documents, Castro allegedly threw a lacrosse ball toward the crowd, narrowly missing a person. He was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, disorderly conduct and conspiracy.

Magnus allegedly discussed plans with Castro to throw objects into the crowd. He faces charges of conspiracy, disorderly conduct and concealing identity.

A University of New Mexico spokesman confirmed the arrests to News Outlet, saying the school supports free speech but will not permit violence or unlawful conduct on campus.

“UNM remains committed to providing a safe, healthy and inclusive environment for all who learn, work and live on our campuses,” the spokesman said. “The university upholds freedom of expression and will not tolerate threats, violence or other conduct that violates the law or university policies.”

News Outlet contacted an attorney for Magnus. It was not immediately known whether Castro had legal representation.

In an unrelated incident the following day, a 70-year-old poet allegedly slapped a Turning Point Action member outside a polling location in New Hampshire.

The Laconia Police Department said officers arrested Stephen Redic at about 8 a.m. Wednesday. He was charged with simple assault, a misdemeanor, and disorderly conduct, a violation.

Police said Redic was leaving when he approached the Turning Point tent and asked “to read a poem about rich people.”

Video of the confrontation appears to show Redic becoming increasingly agitated. He shouted at the man, made an obscene gesture, slapped him across the face and then walked away.
