2 killed in California crash as McLaren smashes into tree, bursts into flames

Two people died after a McLaren crashed into a tree, split in half and burst into flames during a violent early-morning collision in California.

The fatal crash occurred at about 12:20 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of Culver Drive and Deerfield Avenue in Irvine, police said.

Officers and Orange County Fire Authority crews were dispatched to the area following reports of a single-vehicle crash.

According to investigators, the 2019 McLaren was stopped at a traffic signal before heading north once the light turned green.

Police said the car was traveling at a high rate of speed when the driver apparently lost control.

The McLaren hit a curb and then crashed into a tree. The impact split the vehicle into two sections, after which it caught fire.

Two occupants were found dead inside the wreckage. Their identities had not been released by Saturday, and authorities had not immediately disclosed their ages or provided additional information about the victims.

The cause and circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.

Authorities have not said whether any other vehicles were involved in the Irvine collision.
