A homecoming block party in a Georgia town ended in deadly violence early Sunday, leaving two people dead and at least 35 others wounded in a shooting.
More than 1,000 people had gathered near Pine Street in Vienna, Georgia, for the celebration when gunfire erupted at about 1:25 a.m., Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy said.
The two people killed were men aged 20 and 23, according to Dooly County Coroner Brett Walls. Their relatives and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation have been informed, though officials have not publicly identified the victims.
The GBI said it would work with local law enforcement to investigate the shooting.
“Deputies immediately responded to the area and discovered multiple people had been shot,” the GBI said in a statement.
“Deputies also found two people in the 600 block of Pine Street that were pronounced deceased on scene. Victims were taken to several regional hospitals for treatment.”
Authorities were already monitoring the large gathering when shots were fired from at least two spots roughly one block apart, according to the sheriff.
As of Sunday, investigators had not identified a suspect or determined what led to the shooting.
