Marshals nab teen wanted for murder of Penn State student 1,700 miles from crime scene, 2nd suspect in custody

A Pennsylvania teenager suspected in the fatal shooting of Penn State student Billy Schmidt was arrested in Colorado after a month-long search, authorities said Thursday. Schmidt was killed while walking home from an NBA Finals watch party, and investigators say the teen was found at the Colorado home of a distant relative just hours before an alleged accomplice turned himself in.

Azzubair Outen-Fleming, 16, was taken into custody in Colorado Springs by the U.S. Marshals Service. According to the agency, he initially attempted to conceal his identity. He is now being held in a juvenile detention facility while awaiting extradition to Philadelphia.

Authorities issued warrants Tuesday for Outen-Fleming and another 16-year-old, Kaiseem Smith, who is also accused of involvement in the shooting. Hours after the Marshals Service announced Outen-Fleming’s arrest, the agency said Smith had surrendered to the Philadelphia Police Department.

Philadelphia Police Department Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore said Outen-Fleming is facing a murder charge, according to Fox 29.

Schmidt, 22, was shot during what police have described as an attempted armed robbery in Philadelphia around 1:30 a.m. on June 6.

Responding officers found Schmidt suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died minutes later. The shooting was captured on surveillance video.

In the footage, Schmidt is heard demanding his phone back before a gunshot is heard moments later.

The video shows a man throwing a cellphone before another individual can be seen running around a corner, while being chased by Schmidt, who was then shot in the chest.

Schmidt’s father, Bill Schmidt, told ABC7 that his son was on his way home from a bar where he was watching the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs with friends.

“He was a really good person who cared about everybody and never hurt or bothered a soul, never bothered anyone and for him to get shot like that is a travesty,” Bill Schmidt said. “I’m shocked when they stole his phone that he chased them.”
