The British government has shifted its stance, now permitting the United States to utilize its military bases for airstrikes intended to remove Iranian blockades in the Strait of Hormuz.
On Friday, Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s office released a statement confirming the decision. The statement clarified, “The agreement allowing the US to operate from UK bases in defense of the region includes US actions to neutralize missile sites and capabilities used to target ships in the Strait of Hormuz.”
Previously, the UK had restricted US access to its bases solely for operations that directly protected British interests or lives. This policy was evident when missiles from Tehran targeted British forces stationed in Cyprus earlier in the conflict.
The statement further expressed strong disapproval of Iran’s expanding target range to international shipping. “Ministers condemned Iran’s escalation in targeting international vessels,” it noted. “They agreed that Iran’s reckless attacks, which include those on Red Ensign ships and those of our allies and Gulf partners, risk escalating the regional crisis and exacerbating the economic challenges faced by the UK and globally.”
The statement concluded by emphasizing the UK’s dedication to safeguarding its people, interests, and allies, while adhering to international law and avoiding deeper involvement in the conflict. It stressed the importance of urgent de-escalation and a swift resolution to the ongoing war.
