Human remains found in West Coast national park ID'd after 28 years

After over two decades, authorities have finally identified the skeletal remains of a man discovered at a secluded campsite in Washington state’s wilderness.

In 2000, the remains were found inside a sleeping bag within a tent located in an isolated part of Olympic National Park, as reported by the National Park Service.

Initially, investigators struggled to determine the identity of the individual. However, in 2025, a forensic genealogy lab utilized a DNA sample to trace potential relatives.

Two people stand by a rocky riverbed, surrounded by dense forests and mountains.

Following interviews with family members across several states and thorough genetic analysis, investigators successfully identified the man as Joseph Louis Serrao Jr.

“This case went unresolved for nearly 30 years, yet our investigators remained committed to identifying this person and providing answers for his family,” stated Debra Flowers, deputy chief of the National Park Service Investigative Services Branch.

“I am proud of the perseverance and teamwork involved in achieving this identification. I hope it offers some solace to those who have spent years wondering about Joseph’s fate.”
