Ahead of opening of Obama Presidential Center, Chicago traffic could be impacted by road closures, parking restrictions

CHICAGO (WLS) — As the grand opening of the Obama Presidential Center draws near, the surrounding area is experiencing a mix of excitement and logistical shifts. Scheduled to open its doors to the public on June 19, the center is prompting various changes in the neighborhood.

Midway Plaisance Park, neighboring the center, officially opened on Monday. The park features a playground designed to be inclusive for children of all abilities, marking a positive addition to Chicago’s South Side.

With the inauguration of the Center expected to attract significant crowds, local authorities have begun implementing road closures and parking restrictions. These adjustments, which commenced this Monday, will continue to roll out over the coming week.

“If it makes the neighborhood better, I’m all for it,” remarked Monica Anders, a resident of the South Side. “I just hope the closures don’t last too long.”

However, not all locals are embracing the changes with open arms. Some residents living just across from the center have expressed concerns about accessibility and increased congestion.

“We’re excited about the Obama Presidential Center, but there should have been a plan to manage traffic more efficiently,” shared LaTanya Jackson, another South Side resident, emphasizing the need for smoother traffic flow amid the developments.

Residents ABC7 spoke with say they have seen new flyers on Monday but had been warned weeks ago.

“We are going to be sending out more information out flyer-ing to those in the immediate footprint. Those affected by the closure are aware,” said 5th Ward Ald. Desmon Yancy.

Jackie Graves says he has kept up with changes. As a Chicagoan who uses a wheelchair, he says he always has to plan his transportation. He urges others to plan for the detours in advance.

“If people don’t make plans to navigate and use GPS to use different routes to blame the Obama Center, don’t blame traffic, they got to take responsibility,” Graves said.

“This is a once in a lifetime event. I’m asking everyone for their patience as we move through this momentous event,” Yancy said.

Those traveling around the center will have even more detours when Stony Island closes starting next Monday.
