MAROA, Ill. (WCIA) — As the new season of fall football kicks off, every team in the state has its eyes set on success. Last year, the Maroa-Forsyth Trojans came close to achieving their ultimate goal.

Under the leadership of head coach Josh Jostes, now entering his 26th year at the helm, the Trojans narrowly missed victory in the Class 2A state championship game against Chicago Christian. This season, most of that team returns, transitioning into practice after a summer where almost every player attended.

“We’re quite lucky to have a lot of our players back in the lineup,” Jostes mentioned. “Last season, we started with no returning linemen, and things still worked out well. This year, I really like our line’s potential. They’re enjoyable to coach, and we’re just beginning our journey.”

Even with experienced players, the Trojans introduce fresh talent in nearly all positions. Seniors, including quarterback Ryne Shepard, are key in helping newer players adapt and learn the team’s culture.

“It begins in the weight room, where we work harder and take on bigger roles,” Shepard explained. “It’s also about the small things, like finding open spaces and understanding the field, whether on defense or offense. I’m here to support them with anything they need.”

Maroa-Forsyth opens up the season on the road against Athens on August 29.
