Venezuela protest in Chicago: Protests today expected after Nicolas Maduro captured, Saturday's Federal Plaza demonstration

CHICAGO (WLS) — The Chicago area is bracing for more protests on Sunday following the dramatic U.S. military actions in Venezuela that led to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife.

In downtown Chicago, demonstrators convened on Saturday shortly after President Donald Trump revealed the details of the operation. A significant number of them voiced their opposition to the military intervention.

Federal Plaza in the Loop became a hub of dissent on Saturday, filled with people criticizing the Trump administration’s decision, which they viewed as an unwarranted act of aggression.

While some Venezuelan expatriates expressed relief at the ousting of Maduro’s regime, concerns were raised about the lack of congressional oversight in the operation’s execution.

Participants in the protests urged the Trump administration to concentrate on domestic issues, with some drawing parallels between this event and prior U.S. military engagements abroad.

President Trump has indicated that the U.S. will temporarily govern Venezuela until a new government is established.

Maduro is currently being held in a Brooklyn, New York, detention center and faces drug and weapons charges. Venezuela’s vice president, meanwhile, addressed the country on state television after the attack, calling for Maduro’s release.

Sunday afternoon’s demonstrations are expected to take place in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood and in north suburban Schaumburg.
