Swedish Hospital shooting: Visitation held Thursday for fallen Chicago Police Officer John Bartholomew

In a tragic turn of events at Swedish Hospital on the North Side, Officer John Bartholomew was fatally shot after a robbery suspect was apprehended, according to the Chicago Police Department.

CHICAGO (WLS) — On Thursday, family members, friends, and fellow first responders came together to pay tribute to a Chicago police officer who lost his life in a shooting incident at a North Side hospital.

The morning at Saint Andrews Greek Orthodox Church began with a brief, yet poignant, procession to honor Officer Bartholomew. He is fondly remembered as a devoted father and an officer committed to his community.

As a mark of respect, police officers escorted the hearse carrying Officer Bartholomew’s body into the church. Draped over his casket was the Chicago flag, symbolizing his service to the city.

Outside the church, blue ribbons and flags adorned the area, serving as a tribute to the fallen officer and his sacrifice.

Officer Bartholomew met his untimely death on April 25 while performing his duties. He and his partner were shot while overseeing a robbery suspect at Swedish Hospital.

“Officer Nelson Crespo is in the hospital and although has made some improvements he’s still fighting for his life. and were still fighting with him. were going to always be there for the families of the fallen,” Superintendent Snelling said.

Bartholomew has been with the department since 2015. He was a husband and father and is described as always putting his family first.

The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation said his energetic presence left a lasting impression on his fellow officers.

There were street closures on DuSable Lake Shore Drive from Foster to Hollywood and Sheridan Rd from Bryn Mawr to Hollywood.

The funeral is planned for 10 a.m. Friday at Saint Andrews Greek Orthodox Church.
