Weather conditions are expected to suit outdoor celebrations across much of the country, with dry, mostly sunny weather forecast for both days in all the capital cities.
What’s more, maximum temperatures will be more than 20C in all capital cities.

As the calendar flips from 2025 to 2026, many are eagerly checking forecasts to plan their New Year’s Eve celebrations. The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has provided a glimpse into what the weather will look like in various cities as we bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new one.

For those celebrating in one city, the BoM predicts a pleasant temperature of 27 degrees Celsius on Sunday, offering a comfortable backdrop for outdoor festivities. Meanwhile, another city can expect a cooler day, with temperatures forecasted to be around 20 degrees Celsius, perfect for those who prefer a brisk evening.

Elsewhere, the mercury is set to rise, with one locale expecting a hot day at 32 degrees Celsius. This might be the ideal setting for beach parties or poolside gatherings. In a different region, even warmer conditions are anticipated, with temperatures climbing to 34 degrees Celsius, ensuring that summer vibes are fully embraced as the year concludes.

If you’re planning to picnic and watch Sydney’s iconic fireworks, the good news is that the weather is likely to be pleasant. New Year’s Eve will be mostly sunny in Sydney, with only a slight chance of rain.

Finally, another city is forecasted to experience a mild 26 degrees Celsius, providing a balance between warm and cool. No matter where you are, the BoM’s predictions offer a variety of climates to suit any New Year’s Eve plan.

Melbourne

On the 31st, Melbourne will be mostly cloudy with a slight chance of rain in the morning. Later in the afternoon, Melburnians will have a sunnier day.

As of Sunday, the BoM is forecasting temperatures of 20C.

Brisbane

Brisbane will be mostly sunny and warm with light winds becoming northeasterly 15 to 20 km/h during the day.

As of Sunday, the BoM is forecasting temperatures of 32C.

Perth

Western Australia’s sunny streak will continue on Wednesday, with Perth being the hottest city in Australia on New Year’s Eve.

As of Sunday, the BoM is forecasting temperatures of 34C.

Adelaide

Adelaide will finish 2025 with a warm and mostly sunny day with a 90 per cent chance of no rain.

As of Sunday, the BoM is forecasting temperatures of 26C.

Hobart

The capital of Tasmania will be Australia’s coldest city on New Year’s Eve, with mostly sunny weather.

As of Sunday, the BoM is forecasting temperatures of 19C.

Canberra

There is a slight, 25 per cent chance of 1mm of rain in Australia’s capital with a chance of a thunderstorm later in the day.

As of Sunday, the BoM is forecasting temperatures of 30C.

Darwin

The city will most likely be rainy on the last day of 2025, with a 50 per cent chance of at least 1mm rain and a 25 per cent chance of more than 10mm rain.

As of Sunday, the BoM is forecasting temperatures of 33C.

New Year’s Day weather forecasts

Sydney

The first day of 2026 will be cloudy for Sydneysiders with a 25 per cent chance of at least 1 mm of rain.

As of Sunday, the BoM is forecasting temperatures of 25C.

Melbourne

1 January will be partly cloudy in Melbourne with a 90 per cent chance of no rain.

As of Sunday, the BoM is forecasting temperatures of 25C.

Brisbane

BoM’s weekly forecast predicts a partly cloudy day with a slight chance of a shower for Brisbane on Thursday.

As of Sunday, the BoM is forecasting temperatures of 29C.

Perth

Perth’s weather will not change significantly, with the city predicted to have another sunny, warm day.

As of Sunday, the BoM is forecasting temperatures of 35C.

Adelaide

The city will have a mostly sunny day, with a slight chance of showers.

As of Sunday, the BoM is forecasting temperatures of 30C.

Hobart

BoM’s forecast shows a dry day for Hobart with Light winds becoming east to southeasterly 15 to 25 km/h during the day.

As of Sunday, the BoM is forecasting temperatures of 22C.

Canberra

The city will experience a cloudy day with a 25 per cent chance of at least 1 mm of rain.

As of Sunday, the BoM is forecasting temperatures of 25C.

Darwin

Darwin is predicted to start 2026 with a rainy day, with the possibility of a storm, according to the BoM. The forecast indicates a 50 per cent chance of receiving at least 5mm of rain, and also a 50 per cent chance of at least 20mm of rain.
As of Sunday, the BoM is forecasting temperatures of 33C.
