Prominent late-night comedians Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert have remained silent on the resignation of Democrat Eric Swalwell, who stepped down amidst serious allegations. Despite having previously shown significant support for Swalwell, neither host has addressed his departure in their recent monologues.
Swalwell, a California Democrat, resigned from his congressional seat on Monday and also withdrew his candidacy for California Governor. This decision followed a series of accusations from multiple women, alleging sexual harassment and assault during his political career.
Known for his frequent appearances on late-night television, Swalwell was a regular guest on shows like ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. These platforms offered him substantial exposure, particularly during his gubernatorial campaign.
Despite the high-profile nature of Swalwell’s resignation, neither Kimmel nor Colbert have commented on his dramatic exit from the political scene.
Additionally, both hosts have overlooked the unfolding controversy involving Sen. Ruben Gallego, a close associate of Swalwell. Gallego has claimed ignorance of Swalwell’s alleged misconduct, despite their close friendship.
In a similar vein, the resignation of Rep. Tony Gonzales, a Texas Republican, who also faced allegations of sexual misconduct, has not been addressed by the late-night figures.
Recently, the Media Research Center noted that Swalwell was a frequent guest on left-wing TV and cable newsers, appearing on MS NOW 26 times and CNN 24 times just this year. Neither outlet ever pressed Swalwell on the sexual scandal that was known long before these younger women accused him of unwanted advances — a reported dalliance with a Chinese spy.
Both Kimmel and Colbert have spent most of their late-night careers on a nightly campaign to destroy Donald Trump, but they rarely mention any of the problems surrounding Democrats. During Joe Biden’s regrettable four years in the White House, both hosts practically ignored the cognitively declining octogenarian, except to make light remarks that made old Joe look like everyone’s favorite grandpa.
