Woman Killed in Santa Monica Bathroom; Harrowing Details Emerge

A woman was beaten to death Saturday inside a Santa Monica residential care facility serving adults with mental illness and developmental disabilities, marking another deadly incident in a city already shaken by recent violence, including a fatal shooting near the Santa Monica Pier just days earlier.

The homicide is Santa Monica’s fifth of 2026, surpassing the four killings reported in the city during all of 2025 and intensifying public concern about violent crime in the coastal community.

Santa Monica police were called at about 5:21 p.m. to The Manor, a state-licensed Adult Residential Facility located at 1905 Pico Blvd., after receiving a report that a woman needed medical help.

When officers arrived, they found an adult woman with serious injuries. Paramedics with the Santa Monica Fire Department tried to save her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbors told KTLA the woman was discovered unresponsive after being attacked in a shared bathroom at the facility.

Police have not released details about the exact manner of death. By 8:45 p.m., authorities said a male suspect had been arrested in connection with the killing.

Investigators have not publicly named the suspect or said what may have led to the fatal attack, though officials confirmed they are not searching for any additional suspects.

Detectives and forensic teams remain on the case as Santa Monica police continue treating the death as a homicide.

The homicide unfolded inside The Manor, which has operated since 1965 and provides room, board, care and supervision for adults with mental illness and developmental disabilities.

The facility, located across the street from Santa Monica College, has long been criticized by neighbors and is a frequent source of police calls.

Licensed by the California Department of Social Services’ Community Care Licensing Division, The Manor is an Adult Residential Facility, not a conventional apartment building, market-rate housing, or Section 8 housing.

The latest homicide comes as law enforcement activity has surged across Santa Monica.

Newly released department data shows police made 2,656 arrests through July 4, a nearly 70% increase from the 1,563 arrests during the same period last year.

Officer-initiated activity also rose 27.5%, even as calls for service from residents declined 4%.
