Kelly Clarkson opened her long-awaited Las Vegas residency looking entirely at ease beneath the bright stage lights — and relaxed enough to say exactly what was on her mind.
Fans arrived expecting a night powered by Clarkson’s biggest songs, but the Caesars Palace debut also offered an unexpected glimpse into her current feelings about NBC, five months after she revealed she was stepping away from the network’s daytime staple, The Kelly Clarkson Show.
At the July 17 performance, Clarkson appeared to mock NBC’s workplace culture while interacting with the crowd. After touching a fan’s jacket, she joked: ‘I would get fired at NBC… but I don’t work there anymore.’ Moments later, she celebrated the freedom more directly, declaring: ‘No more HR meetings!’
A source close to the show said the onstage remarks may have surprised concertgoers, but they were in keeping with Clarkson’s reputation for being candid and unpredictable — qualities that reportedly have NBC executives watching closely.
‘Kelly’s comments come as no surprise to those who were aware of what was going on behind the scenes,’ the insider exclusively told the Daily Mail. ‘She was in and out of HR meetings, meetings with executives, higher ups – it was all part of her job.’
Clarkson’s remarks did not stop there. From the stage, she suggested that making television was more difficult than touring and joked that ‘everyone hated’ having to sit through human resources meetings with her.

‘NBC is very corporate and they take their HR meetings and any complaints seriously. It’s very rule abiding,’ the source explained.
That same off-the-cuff humor has long been a sore spot higher up the chain, with Clarkson’s habit of going rogue helping cement her reputation as a loose cannon.
‘She had to stick to the script to a certain extent, but most of the time would actually go off script – and then she’d hear it from producers afterwards,’ the insider said.
But if Clarkson is now letting loose under the neon lights of Sin City, the official announcement that she was stepping away from the NBC juggernaut, set to wrap in the fall, was, at least publicly, handled in a far more gracious tone.
‘I am forever grateful and honored to have worked alongside the greatest band and crew you could hope for, all the talent and inspiring people who have shared their time and lives with us, all the fans who have supported our show, and to NBC for always being such a supportive and incredible partner,’ she wrote in February.
‘Because of all of that, this was not an easy decision, but this season will be my last hosting The Kelly Clarkson Show. Stepping away from the daily schedule will allow me to prioritize my kids, which feels necessary and right for this next chapter of our lives.’
The timing was poignant, as Clarkson made the announcement after her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, died in 2025 following a private battle with cancer at the age of 48.
He left behind four children: River Rose, 11, and nine-year-old Remington, whom he shared with Clarkson, as well as Savannah, 23, and Seth, 18, from his previous marriage.

According to the insider, however, Clarkson was largely a bright presence for the staff throughout her tenure.
‘It’s not easy for anyone to take on this role but she did a great job and everyone who worked with her really did enjoy working with her,’ the source said. ‘She just had this charisma and charm and was friendly with her staff.
‘Most of them have been with her from the start and that really says a lot about who she is. It’s just part of who she is and her personality.’
Those traits, according to the source, were true to Clarkson long before the Emmys and the network embrace – back when she was a 20-year-old in Texas juggling cocktail waiting, movie theater shifts and Six Flags promo work while trying to break into the music industry.
‘Just like they say – you can take the girl out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the girl. That was very much Kelly,’ the source added. ‘She’s a country girl at heart and has certain values that she doesn’t put to the side for anyone or anything.
‘She’s down to earth and really enjoys that side of her – you know, the glam and pressure to look good on TV can become overwhelming if that’s not the life you grew up with.’
That same unfiltered, straight-talking personality, however, was at odds with the more buttoned-up world of network TV.

At her Vegas residency debut, Clarkson didn’t hold back, venting about HR culture and drawing a sharp contrast between life on tour and life in corporate America.
‘It’s funny, you go to those HR meetings and you’re like, “Nobody on the road would last,”‘ she told the crowd as she took aim at what she sees as overly cautious workplace rules. ‘It’s just a different world.’
And, by her own admission, she wasn’t exactly a passive participant in those meetings.
‘Everyone actually hated doing HR meetings with me because I am a nerd,’ she said onstage. ‘I would literally be like, “I’m sorry, so your example is …?” I would stop the class and everyone would be like, “Can I do the meeting without Kelly?” Cause they’d have separate meetings, and everybody would opt out of any meeting I would be in.’
‘I would just get into it because I feel like you need to get into it. You got to protect everyone,’ she added. ‘Anyway, I don’t have to do it anymore.’

Still, that outspoken streak didn’t always land well with everyone involved in the show’s production.
‘It was more those who weren’t onstage with her every day who had things to say, like her going off script or saying rated R things that they’d have to cut out after taping or her accidentally dropping F bombs,’ our source said.
And Clarkson’s clashes with HR weren’t limited to one-off remarks. Clarkson previously aired her frustrations during a concert in Atlantic City in May 2025 – this time in the context of her 60-pound weight loss and the restrictions placed on workplace conversations.
‘Every time I go to an HR meeting, I’m like, “How have I not been fired?”… they say you’re not allowed to say someone looks attractive, and I say f*** that,’ she told the crowd.
‘Because some of those b****** are out here working, and we’re trying, and I want every motherf***** that passes me to go, “Damn. Well done.”‘
She went on to recall being reprimanded after complimenting someone’s transformation.
‘They were like, “Well, it might make people feel bad that they looked bad before.” I was fat before, so I’m saying I want you to say, “Damn,”‘ she said.
At the time, however, not everyone was amused. Another insider claimed Clarkson’s remarks came across as ‘ungrateful,’ particularly given the sacrifices made by staff who had relocated for the show.
‘Kelly Clarkson is ungrateful, and she fails to recognize how her staff uprooted their lives in Los Angeles and left their homes to relocate to New York because they believed in her and they loved working for her,’ a source said at the time.
Clarkson has also previously hinted at frustrations with daytime television, saying the relentless schedule left little room for her first love: performing.
‘It’s like a whole other job,’ she admitted during the same Atlantic City performance. ‘We are bummed ’cause we love doing shows, and it’s hard to fit it in, so it’s cool when it does work out with the schedule.’
As her TV chapter comes to a close, insiders say the singer is firmly back in her musical element, with ten studio albums and three Grammy Awards already behind her.
‘Those who know her knew she wasn’t going to last a decade on TV. Singing and performing is where her heart is. She’s not going to retire her music career any time soon, that’s for sure,’ the source said at the time.
‘She’s loving every part of being on stage in Las Vegas. Performing is where she shines the most. If all goes well with ticket sales, she’d love to continue the residency or even return for more dates in the future.’
And if her opening night comments are anything to go by, there may be more candid reflections on her NBC years still to come.
‘Oh 100 percent you can expect her to tell more about her time on the show/working with NBC down the road,’ the source added.
Still, the network may not be entirely without protection if the gloves come off.
‘There are NDAs in place for a reason,’ the source said. ‘There would be legal action/some kind of legal warning if Kelly says anything that breaks her NDA with them.’
