Wife of Alabama sheriff candidate arrested for domestic violence

The wife of a prominent deputy recently poised to become the next sheriff in Alabama has found herself in legal trouble, facing charges of domestic violence.

Aggie Kalyn Hunt, aged 36, was placed under arrest and taken to Lee County Jail on charges of domestic violence in the third degree. This incident followed a police response to a reported domestic disturbance on Monday.

Her husband, Cam Hunt, also 36, has recently garnered attention after securing a win against the long-serving sheriff of Lee County during the Republican primary. With no opposition in the upcoming November general election, his path to becoming sheriff seems assured.

The Opelika Police Department confirmed Aggie Hunt’s arrest in a statement to WRBL. However, they refrained from divulging further details, citing the need to protect those involved.

“We can confirm the arrest of Aggie Hunt on domestic violence charges,” said Chief Jonathan Clifton. “As this is a domestic issue, we will not be releasing additional information to ensure the safety of all parties concerned.”

‘Due to this being a domestic incident, no other details will be released. We normally don’t release domestic incident information for the safeguard of all parties involved.’

The circumstances surrounding Hunt’s arrest are unclear, and no information has been made available about what prompted the domestic disturbance call and who the victim or victims are.

Cam released a statement describing the situation as a ‘private family matter involving people I love and care about deeply.’

‘Out of respect for everyone involved, I will not be discussing details publicly or engaging in speculation online,’ he said.

‘I understand there will naturally be commentary and rumors, but I would ask people to remember that my family deserves privacy, grace, and dignity during a difficult moment.’

He added, ‘I also want people to know that I’m fine, the kids are fine, and Kalyn is fine. While this situation has unfortunately become public, it is still a deeply personal matter for our family.

‘My focus right now is on my children, my family, and moving forward appropriately. I appreciate the concern, prayers, and support from those who have reached out.’

Records show that Hunt was released on a $1,000 bond, and it is unclear when she will appear in court on the matter, as she is not listed on the docket for the rest of the week.

The couple’s social media is filled with loving photos of them and their three children, which Cam made central to his campaign.

Cam, who is a Marine Corps veteran and former sheriff’s deputy, won the Republican nomination on May 19, defeating Sheriff Jay Jones by 307 votes, according to WTVM

Jones held the office for 27 years and fired Cam in October when he told his boss he was running against him.

‘No one should ever be threatened or silenced for exercising their rights as private citizens. Off-duty political beliefs are protected by the Constitution,’ Cam said at the time.

Jones defended the decision at the time, saying Cam’s candidacy would have distracted from work in the office.

The Daily Mail contacted Opelika Police and the Lee County District Attorney’s Office for more information.
