Glass window falls 400 feet from NYC skyscraper onto Midtown street

City officials reported that a glass pane descended over 400 feet from a skyscraper in Midtown, shattering on the sidewalk and street below early Sunday morning.

This 4-by-6-foot glass pane dropped from the structure at 1345 Sixth Ave., a 50-story, 2-million-square-foot high-rise situated at W. 54th St., around 7 a.m., as stated by the city’s Department of Buildings.

No one was injured by the glass, though police blocked off the sidewalk as first responders gathered.

The glass came from the building’s 43rd floor, which is presently undergoing changes, officials from Buildings confirmed. It was noted that the floor had sustained damage during prior construction work on Friday.

Contractors are in the process of sealing the floor, and the Department of Buildings (DOB) has issued a violation to JRM Contracting, the general contractor, for not adequately securing the construction area, officials noted.

Furthermore, the Buildings department has imposed a partial stop-work order affecting the 43rd floor and demanded an engineering report concerning the other windows at the construction site.

Despite the approaching nor’easter and its ferocious winds, a DOB spokesperson said the incident did not appear to be weather related.
