Deaths in San Antonio rise to 10 and some are still missing after heavy storms, officials say

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Officials in San Antonio announced on Friday that the death toll from severe storms and flooding has increased to 10, with several individuals still unaccounted for.

As floodwaters gradually recede, rescue teams continue to search for those missing after Thursday’s heavy rains, according to Joe Arrington, a spokesperson for the San Antonio Fire Department. In one area of the nation’s seventh-largest city, more than 7 inches (18 centimeters) of rain caused over a dozen vehicles to be discovered stuck and overturned in a creek.

San Antonio officials said the search for the missing was focused on the creek.

Authorities reported that swift waters likely carried these vehicles off the road, and over 70 water rescue operations were conducted throughout the city.

“Our hearts are with the families of those we’ve lost to this week’s flash floods and the families who continue searching for their loved ones,” Mayor Ron Nirenberg said.
