A bizarre airplane seat dispute has ignited a heated online debate after a woman allegedly used an earring to create a painful boundary between herself and her seatmate.
A man named Otto recently shared his version of the encounter on X, claiming the woman beside him threaded the post of her earring through the sleeve of her sweater and left the sharp end exposed to deter him from moving into her space.
According to Otto, she resorted to the unusual tactic after becoming upset when he used the shared armrest before takeoff. He said the earring later jabbed him when the plane encountered turbulence.
The passenger, identified as Kadia Tubman, has since offered a very different account. She said she placed the earring through her shirt only after Otto repeatedly touched her, leaving social media users sharply divided over who was in the wrong.
“Met a very passive-aggressive passenger on @Delta today,” Otto wrote in the post that quickly gained attention. He claimed she became upset almost immediately because he was using the armrest before the plane had taken off.
“She installed an earring on her sleeve to poke me,” he alleged. “I didn’t mind until the turbulence, when it stabbed me.”
Otto said he calmly asked her to take it off, but claimed she refused and accused him of occupying too much of the seat because he was a man.
“Is this legal? And how do people become like this?” he asked.

He alleged that she fitted the earring to her sleeve after becoming angry that he had used the armrest before takeoff, and said the jewelry later pricked him during turbulence. The woman was photographed with the earring jutting from her sweater
Otto accompanied his post with a photograph of the woman seated on the plane in a blue sweater, gray sweatpants and headphones. A silver earring could be seen protruding from the fabric near her arm.
In a subsequent update, Otto said he reported the incident to a flight attendant after landing. He claimed the crew member did not ask the woman to remove the earring and instead requested that he remain at the gate after leaving the aircraft.
“I had to get to work and didn’t want to wait around with the passive aggressor,” he wrote.
He added that he had initially been impressed by what he described as her “solution”—at least until the improvised barrier actually poked him.
As the post spread across social media, Tubman responded on Instagram with her own account of the tense flight.
Alongside an airport selfie, she explained in a lengthy caption that Otto’s laptop was already covering the armrest between their seats when she arrived.
“I left it alone because he was working,” she wrote. Tubman said that after taking her aisle seat, she leaned toward the armrest but avoided placing her arm on it because Otto was occupying most of the space and extending beyond its boundary.
She also alleged that Otto repeatedly brushed against her arm during the journey and kept raising the armrest, actions she said disturbed her and woke her up.

“I politely explained what was happening and showed him how his arm was making contact with me,” Tubman continued. “He said there was no space.”
‘I said I understood and that’s why I let him take up the entire armrest to work. He moved over but after a little while he shifted back. I pointed it out once again and fell asleep… until I was awakened by his arm.’
She said at that point she was ‘done’ so she ‘took off her earring and put it on her sleeve.’
‘He would’ve had to be so close to me to be poked,’ she pointed out. ‘Like come on now.’
Tubman said after Otto got poked, he furiously described her earring as a ‘weapon’ and threatened to ‘get his lawyer involved.’
‘He demanded I remove my earring. When I refused, he asked if it was necessary and I said, “Yes, clearly because you finally stopped touching me,”‘ she added.
‘He ignored my explanation and called the flight attendant … By this time he’d fully repositioned himself in the seat, nudged between the chair and the window – a position he could have sat in the whole time.’
Tubman claimed that when the flight attendant came over, Otto ‘changed his story’ and claimed she was ‘leaning over in the seat and stabbing him during turbulence.’
‘I looked that woman in her eyes and said, “He’s not telling the truth and I would be happy to speak with him and the captain or staff at the gate.” She agreed we’d wait to get to the gate,’ Tubman wrote.
‘I got off the plane first and waited for him. He walked past me. I said, “Sir, sir.” He kept walking. I waited for the captain and eventually left.’
The incident sparked a furious argument between social media users, as some took her side and some took his.

One person described Tubman as ‘next level insane’ for the move, while others hailed it as genius.
‘Her arm is in her lap. If the earring poked you then you’re definitely stretched into her space and are in the wrong,’ one person replied to Otto’s post.
‘If you were close enough to be poked by that earring then you’re the problem lol,’ another agreed.
‘She is clearly well within her seat. You had to of been spilling over into hers if that was poking you. I wouldn’t like it either. I don’t want to touch you. The earring is a bit much, but she has a point,’ someone else pointed out.
‘That is not a nice person. I’m sure it’s skirting the line of legality since she did it with the intent to harm, where a simple conversation would suffice,’ a different user wrote about Tubman.
‘She needs to go to jail. This is not okay,’ a fifth post read.
