Urshela became an international free agent with the Cleveland Indians in July 2008. In 2009, he debuted with the Dominican Summer League Indians and the Arizona League Indians. Additionally, he spent one season each with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers of the Class A-Short Season New York–Penn League, Lake County Captains of the Class A Midwest League, Carolina Mudcats of the Class A-Advanced Carolina League, and Akron Aeros of the Class AA Eastern League from 2010 to 2013. Prior to the 2013 season, he was a member of Colombia’s national baseball team in World Baseball Classic qualifiers.
Urshela was added to the Indians’ 40-man roster following the 2014 season. MLB.com ranked him as the Indians’ fourth top prospect in 2015. Similarly, Gio made his MLB debut in 2015 with Cleveland. During the 2019 season, Urshela emerged as a batter for the Yankees. He eventually started the 2015 season with Columbus. On June 11, 2015, he had his first big league hit, a single, and his first major league home run in the same game against the Seattle Mariners.
