Tommy DeBarge was a famed American vocalist, singer-songwriter and bass guitarist in the R&B and funk band, Switch.

Tommy DeBarge was born on September 6, 1957, in Grand Rapids, Detroit, Michigan, the United States to parents, Robert DeBarge Sr (a French descent soldier) and Etterlene Louise Abney.

Tommy DeBarge is an American by nationality and is of African-American Ethnicity. He was raised alongside siblings including Bunny DeBarge (b. 1955), Robert Louis “Bobby” DeBarge, Jr. (1956–1995), William Randall “Randy” DeBarge (b. 1958), Mark “Marty” DeBarge (b. 1959), Eldra Patrick “El” DeBarge (b. 1961), James DeBarge (b. 1963), Jonathan Arthur “Chico” DeBarge (b. 1966), Carol “Peaches” DeBarge (b. 1970) and Darrell “Young” DeBarge (b. 1970).

Tommy DeBarge was a co-founder and bassist of the  Motown Records 1970s R&B band Switch, which included his brother Bobby. The band later received huge fame in the late 1970s and was best known for the hits “There’ll Never Be” and “I Wanna Be Closer.”

Tommy DeBarge and his brother Bobby later formed DeBarge in 1980, a singing group with their siblings El, Bunny, Marty, James, Randy and Chico. However, DeBarge disbanded in 1989. He also served as a paid consultant for Motown.

Tommy was married three times in his life. Firstly, he married Duckie. His second wife was  Tracey, and after Tracey, he married Monique. He too fell victim to drug addiction and battled it for years. Tommy DeBarge was also an author. He had published an autobiography named “There’ll Never Be: A Story of Forgiveness.”

Musician Tommy DeBarge of the famed DeBarge family passed away died at age 64 after being hospitalized for liver and kidney failure.

According to his family, Tommy DeBarge had battled kidney and liver failure over the years and even contracted Covid-19 earlier in 2021 which he had reportedly recovered from. He passed away in the hospital on Thursday, October 21, 2021.
