Former President Joe Biden expressed his delight at the news that a Democrat is set to represent Mar-a-Lago. According to information obtained by the Daily Mail, Biden, age 83, reached out on Wednesday to Emily Gregory, who remarkably triumphed in a Florida special election on Tuesday. This victory shifts Florida’s House District 87, home to former President Donald Trump’s resort, from Republican to Democratic hands. Gregory faced off against Jon Maples, a candidate endorsed by Trump, in the race for the Florida House of Representatives. Previously, the district was held by Republican state Representative Mike Caruso, who secured the seat with a 19-point lead in 2024, during which Trump also clinched the district by about 10 points.
The Personal Call
With nearly all ballots tallied, Gregory emerged with a lead of 2.4 percentage points, or 797 votes, over Maples, as reported by the Associated Press. Biden’s call to Gregory was filled with congratulations. He often uses these opportunities to share his contact information, inviting emerging Democrats to rely on him as a resource, embodying his role as a party elder statesman. Trump had thrown his support behind Maples early in the primary by endorsing him in January. Despite his criticism of mail-in voting, Trump opted to vote by mail in this special election. The White House responded to criticism, clarifying to the Daily Mail that Trump supports the SAVE America Act, which allows mail-in voting under certain conditions like illness or travel.
Beyond Palm Beach
“As everyone is aware, the President resides in Palm Beach and participates in Florida elections, although he primarily resides at the White House in Washington, D.C.,” White House spokesperson Olivia Wales told the Daily Mail, dismissing the issue as insignificant. Biden hasn’t limited his outreach to Gregory; he also contacted Illinois’ Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton following her victory in the state’s Democratic Senate primary last week. Stratton, backed by Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, successfully defeated two Congressional rivals. Given Illinois’ Democratic leanings, Stratton is expected to secure the Senate seat in November, succeeding the retiring Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin.
Biden also reached out to Texas state Representative James Talarico, the winner of the Texas Democratic Senate primary earlier this month. Talarico bested the better-known Representative Jasmine Crockett, who sought the Senate seat after Republicans redistricted her House seat, making it far more red. His race will be far tougher than Stratton’s, as Texas hasn’t elected a Democratic senator since 1988. Beyond making political calls, Biden has dedicated several hours each day to writing his memoir. The ex-President inked a book deal last summer for $10million – far less than the estimated $65million doled out to former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama for their memoirs. The book is expected to be released later this year, but no publication date has been set.
Biden has recently been spotted flying commercial and taking Amtrak, as he did for years while serving in the U.S. Senate representing Delaware. Last week, he made a surprise trip to Boston to mark St. Patrick’s Day. A source familiar tells the Daily Mail that he and the former First Lady, Dr. Jill Biden, have several joint events scheduled for the month of April. Additionally, work on his foundation and presidential library is ramping up. All the while, the 83-year-old is dealing with a serious cancer diagnosis, but insiders have been encouraged that he’s responding well to treatment and is continuing to work on stuff that he cares about.
