Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer is facing a storm of criticism from within his own party, following a controversial agreement by centrist Democrats to resolve the government shutdown. This move has left many Democrats feeling betrayed and frustrated.

Schumer, at 74, stands as the leading Democratic figure in the Senate. Despite his efforts to rally his party against the Republicans’ government spending proposals, he found himself unable to maintain a unified front. Even as he voiced his disapproval of the deal, the pressure from within became evident.

On Sunday evening, a group of eight liberal senators joined forces with Republicans, agreeing to initiate discussions on a government funding bill crafted by the GOP. This decision has sparked discontent among more progressive members of the Democratic Party.

Expressing his dissatisfaction, Schumer took to social media on Sunday night to reiterate his commitment to the cause. He stated his intention to vote against the agreement and pledged to continue advocating for the health care reforms that remain a key focus for his party.

The backlash extended to popular media platforms, with Schumer becoming a focal point of debate on ABC’s “The View” on Monday. The predominantly Democratic panel did not hold back in their critique, questioning his leadership and decision-making.

“I want an opposition party. I think the Democrats caved,” said co-host Sunny Hostin, pointing fingers at the Republicans for the shutdown but expressing disappointment in the Democrats’ actions. She echoed the sentiment of many when she added, “I think the Democrats let down the American people. And like you, Whoopi, I have absolutely no faith the Republican Party will come to the negotiating table.”

‘I think Chuck Schumer, his days are over. If he cannot keep his caucus together, he needs to go, he needs to be replaced,’ Hostin charged.

However, another co-host, Sarah Haines, disagreed and backed Schumer.

‘I have no faith they [Republicans] are going to negotiate and come back to the table,’ co-host Whoopi Goldberg said, driving home her belief that Democrats were duped into a bad deal.

In addition to losing the liberal talk show hosts, Schumer is also bleeding support among lawmakers in his own party.

‘Senator Schumer is no longer effective and should be replaced,’ Democratic Representative Ro Khanna of California posted on X this weekend. ‘If you can’t lead the fight to stop healthcare premiums from skyrocketing for Americans, what will you fight for?’

Connecticut Democratic Representative Seth Moulton similarly skewered Schumer.

‘Tonight is another example of why we need new leadership. If [Schumer] were an effective leader, he would have united his caucus to vote ‘No’ tonight and hold the line on healthcare.’

Maine Democratic Senate hopeful Graham Platner also called on Schumer to step aside.

‘Chuck Schumer should step down,’ he posted on social media along with a video about why the New York senator is no longer fit to lead the party after some democrats ‘caved’ and voted with the GOP.

Further, when Democratic Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona was asked by MSNBC over the weekend whether he would endorse Schumer for another term as party leader, Kelly notably declined to offer his support.

And discontent may have leaked into Schumer’s own Senate office.

The Democratic leader’s digital director for the last seven years, Ken Meyers, abruptly resigned on Friday.

Schumer will be up for re-election in 2028.

Schumer’s office did not immediately respond to the Daily Mail’s request for comment.
