Former Vice President Kamala Harris is set to make her first Michigan campaign appearance alongside Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive Democrat whose political record has not always aligned with hers.
Harris will join El-Sayed in Detroit as he works to assemble a broad coalition capable of carrying his campaign through the November election.
El-Sayed told NewsNation that Harris’ participation is intended to unite voters who supported her in 2024 with the progressive activists who fueled his own Senate bid.
The partnership is an unexpected one, highlighting the larger question of how Harris plans to position herself during the 2026 midterm elections.
Rather than campaigning broadly for Democrats nationwide, Harris has made only select appearances on the 2026 campaign trail.
Her limited schedule, however, cannot be explained simply by suggesting that Democratic candidates do not want her support.
In addition to campaigning with El-Sayed in Michigan, Harris is expected to appear with Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff, Nevada gubernatorial candidate Aaron Ford, and California House candidates Marni Von Wilpert and Richard Pan.
Still, several Democratic contenders have publicly indicated that they would prefer to campaign without her, including Alaska Senate candidate Mary Peltola, Kansas Senate candidate Adam Hamilton and Iowa gubernatorial nominee Rob Sand.

During the 2024 Democratic primary, El-Sayed joined Michigan Democrats in urging voters to choose “uncommitted” instead of supporting Biden, protesting the administration’s response to the Israel-Gaza war.
Mike Rogers’ campaign told NewsNation that it plans to send a truck around the event playing an attack ad focused on El-Sayed’s association with progressive streamer Hasan Piker.
Those candidates have emphasized local concerns while attempting to separate their campaigns from prominent figures in the national Democratic Party.
For Democrats seeking support from independents and Republicans, sharing a stage with Harris could provide opponents with an opportunity to portray them as closely tied to the national party.
Michigan presents a particularly complicated backdrop for Harris, who lost the state to Donald Trump by more than 80,000 votes in 2024.
Trump captured approximately 49.7 percent of the vote, compared with Harris’ 48.3 percent, after Joe Biden had won Michigan for the Democrats in 2020.
El-Sayed is familiar with the divisions that have shaped Michigan’s Democratic coalition.
In the 2024 Democratic primary, he was one of several Michigan Democrats who encouraged voters to mark their ballots “uncommitted” rather than endorse Biden, directing their protest at the administration’s handling of the Israel-Gaza conflict.
After Biden ended his presidential campaign and Harris took over as the Democratic nominee, El-Sayed ultimately backed Harris.
El-Sayed’s career has been closely associated with the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.
Bernie Sanders endorsed him during his 2018 campaign for Michigan governor and has once again supported him in his 2026 Senate campaign.
Now El-Sayed is attempting something considerably broader.
Harris represents an important part of the coalition El-Sayed is trying to assemble.
But her appearance also highlights the complicated relationship between the former vice president and today’s Democratic candidates.
After a bitter primary in which El-Sayed defeated Representative Haley Stevens, Democratic figures have increasingly rallied around him.
Senate Majority PAC, aligned with Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, has committed an additional $10 million to the race, bringing its reported investment to $30 million.
Inside the event, Harris and El-Sayed will be focused on Black maternal health and healthcare costs, giving Harris and El-Sayed a policy issue where both can campaign together without making the appearance solely about their differences over foreign policy.
Outside, Republicans are preparing to make the case that El-Sayed’s progressive alliances tell a very different story.
Mike Rogers’ campaign told NewsNation that it plans to have a truck circling the event and playing an attack ad targeting El-Sayed over his ties to progressive streamer Hasan Piker.
Piker is a prominent political commentator whose outspoken views have made him a deeply polarizing figure on the American left and a frequent target of conservative criticism.
His commentary has included forceful criticism of US foreign policy and Israel, as well as provocative remarks about American military and foreign policy actions.
More recently, El-Sayed has had to put some distance between himself and Hasan Piker as the streamer’s recent comments have drawn backlash.
After Piker made controversial remarks about Jewish Americans and Israel, El-Sayed said that ‘nobody speaks for this campaign besides me and my campaign spokespeople’ and emphasized his commitment to Jewish safety.
He completely disavowed Piker’s comments about Jewish Americans and acknowledged that there are ‘many, many things’ the two disagree on, including Piker’s past comments about 9/11.
