Melania Trump sharply distances herself from Russian oligarch who bankrolled Don Jr and Bettina's wedding party

First Lady Melania Trump is distancing herself from reports that Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev, who has been accused of helping lead an organization involved in the abduction of Ukrainian children, contributed to the lavish wedding celebrations of Donald Trump Jr. and his new wife, Bettina Anderson.

The president’s eldest son married the 39-year-old socialite in Palm Beach, Florida, before the couple traveled to the Bahamas for a wedding celebration at the end of May.

The extravagant party, held on a private island, drew several members of the Trump family, including Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner; Eric Trump and Lara Trump; Tiffany Trump and her husband, Michael; as well as numerous grandchildren.

After an explosive report, Donald Trump Jr. and Bettina acknowledged that Kremlev, a friend of Russian President Vladimir Putin, had paid hundreds of thousands of dollars toward their Bahamas wedding celebration.

Donald and Melania Trump did not attend the wedding festivities, which took place as the conflict with Iran was escalating.

Kremlev’s reported involvement has caused concern in the East Wing because of his alleged connection to the abduction of Ukrainian children—an issue that has become especially personal for the First Lady.

“Mrs. Trump does not, and has never had, a relationship with Mr. Kremlev,” a spokesperson for the First Lady told Our News Outlet. “Mrs. Trump played no role whatsoever in organizing the wedding event and was not privy to any aspect of its financial planning.”

Kremlev is a leader of Healthy Fatherland, a Russian organization under Ukrainian sanctions over its alleged role in a program that removes Ukrainian children from occupied territories and relocates them under the stated pretext of “rehabilitation,” according to a ProPublica report published Monday.

Melania Trump has spearheaded efforts to reunite children who were taken from Ukraine to Russia during the ongoing war between the two countries.

Bettina Trump addressed the rumors about who paid for her May wedding party and posted never-before-seen photos on Instagram on Monday

Bettina Trump addressed speculation over who financed her May wedding celebration and shared previously unseen photos on Instagram Monday.

In August, President Trump hand-delivered a personal letter from the First Lady to Putin about the issue. The Russian president responded in writing and promised to engage with her on the matter.

As of August 2026, the campaign had reunited 34 children with their families in Ukraine.

Melania Trump’s public effort to separate herself from the wedding arrangements underscores the impact the revelations have had on the family.

Trump Jr’s brother Eric, also distanced himself from Kremlev.

‘Eric has absolutely no clue who this person is, nor has never heard his name,’ his spokesman told ProPublica.

Kremlev also serves as the president of the International Boxing Association and hosted Donald Trump Jr for a panel discussion in Istanbul about boxing in December.

Kremlev’s press office told ProPublica the two men became friends based on their common interests in boxing, hunting and the outdoors.

Bettina Trump addressed the report on Instagram on Monday, confirming that Kremlev was ‘our dear friend’ that hosted ‘two incredible nights of celebrations for us’ in the Bahamas after their intimate wedding ceremony in May.

Kremlev reportedly paid to rent a private island in the Bahamas for the party and for a fireworks show for the family and their guests.

Bettina disputed the idea that accepting the generous financial support from a Russian national for the celebrations was inappropriate.

‘Friendship doesn’t require a political motive. Generosity doesn’t automatically come with an agenda,’ she added.

‘So, for anyone determined not to let the facts get in the way of a good story: NO CONSPIRACY, NO MYSTERY. Just a private family wedding, a wonderful weekend with friends and one hell of a party,’ she concluded.

Kremlev’s relationship with Trump Jr also raises concerns about his connections with Russia, a frequent subject of controversy for critics of President Trump.

The Trump family has appeared less concerned about the political implications of foreign business deals and connections overseas during his second term in office.

‘I prohibited them from doing business in my first term, and I got absolutely no credit for it,’ Trump told the New York Times in January. ‘I didn’t have to do that. And it’s really unfair to them.’

‘I found out that nobody cared, and I’m allowed to,’ the president added.
