Outgoing Michigan Democratic Representative Haley Stevens drew attention on Election Day with an unexpected fashion choice as she arrived at the polls with her mother.
Stevens wore an oversized straw hat that social media users compared with the signature headwear of video game character Carmen Sandiego. She was voting in support of Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan’s closely watched Senate contest.
The appearance came days after Stevens was branded a “traitor” for turning against the state’s Democratic Senate nominee, Abdul El-Sayed, and endorsing Rogers in a dramatic last-minute announcement on Sunday.
Her fiancé, Jason Turkish, a Jewish Democrat, has faced accusations that he helped shape her decision, intensifying the backlash inside the Democratic Party.
Turkish has argued that El-Sayed’s “reckless” campaign language “puts Jews at risk” and said he would place “country before party.”
Democratic advertising strategist Abby Anderson reacted to Stevens’ striking poll-day outfit, describing the look as “concerning.”
“I’ve maintained that this is all her personality up until the hat. The hat is concerning lol,” Anderson wrote on X.
Journalist and political commentator Molly Jong Fast also expressed surprise, posting on X: “Wait, no? This is real?”
Another X user, Jordan Zirm, joked that Stevens had arrived at the ballot box “like she just put her life savings on a horse at the Kentucky Derby.”

Although she cast her ballot for a Republican, Stevens predicted that Democrats would regain control of the House.
“It’s the people’s day. And I told this to our next Speaker of the House, Hakeem Jeffries: It’s Majority Makers Day,” Stevens told NewsNation on Tuesday.
Stevens lost Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary to El-Sayed in August. During a CNN interview Sunday evening, she described her decision to support Rogers as “rock solid.”
However, reports indicated that she had told fellow Democrats only hours earlier that she would not back the Republican nominee.
The abrupt reversal triggered widespread anger among Democrats. Senior lawmakers denounced Stevens, several staff members resigned and President Donald Trump welcomed her decision.

When CNN anchor Anderson Cooper asked Stevens on Sunday night what had prompted her change of heart, she repeatedly criticized El-Sayed but did not point to one clear event.
“Well, look, this is just a weight off my shoulders, okay?” Stevens said. “Abdul has been getting angrier and angrier. I was trying to help, and I endorsed him.”
Stevens has also taken issue with El-Sayed’s appearances alongside controversial streamer Hasan Piker and raised concerns about some of his political relationships.
Despite backing Rogers, Stevens has continued to describe herself as a proud Democrat.
