Nalin Haley, the son of former U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley, recently sparked controversy with his outspoken views on legal immigration and U.S. aid to Israel during an interview with Tucker Carlson. At 24, Haley argued for the exclusion of foreign students from American universities and proposed that naturalized citizens should be barred from public office. “Those who grow up in the U.S. have a deeper understanding of the country,” he stated. Remarkably, Haley’s grandparents hailed from India, yet he expressed these restrictive opinions in the interview aired on Wednesday night.
Haley voiced concerns about foreign students, suggesting some might act as spies for other governments, and insisted that American students should be prioritized. Differing significantly from his mother’s well-known support for Israel, Haley advocated for an end to U.S. foreign aid to Jerusalem. This stance reflects a rising tide of nationalism and skepticism among young conservatives, embodying an “America First” philosophy.
When Carlson broached the topic of young people’s increasingly critical views on Israel, Haley agreed, attributing the shift to actions by Israel itself. “It’s not something we’ve done,” Haley argued, placing the responsibility on Israel for any negative perceptions. He further suggested that for improved relations with the U.S., Israel should cease meddling in American politics.
‘And it’s not just Israel. I mean, we need to ban foreign aid…We should not have a single dime going to another country when we have people in poverty with bad schools, medical debt, all that stuff. It makes no sense. That’s part of America first.’ His comments come amid a generational divide within the conservative movement, with younger Gen-Z Republicans holding more negative views of Israel compared to their Boomer counterparts.
Nalin’s mother is viewed as one of the most prominent pro-Israel Republican figures in the nation. Following the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel by Hamas, Haley supported the Israeli military’s response in the Gaza region. During a May 2024 visit to Israel, the former US ambassador to the UN signed an Israeli artillery shell with the message, ‘Finish them!’
Her son, however, has now called on banning foreign lobbying from all countries, including Israel. ‘I think if we cut out the aid, cut out the lobbying, I think it’ll stop a lot of influence, not just from Israel, but from every country.’ Carlson pressed the younger Haley on the topic of Israel by asking if he believes it’s more acceptable for conservatives to criticize Israel.
‘Oh yeah, for sure,’ Nalin responded. ‘I just remember like growing up when I was in that 2016 era of conservative politics, Israel was untouchable. Like you could not say anything about it. ‘And in some ways it’s still kind of that way. But it’s like it’s just weird. It’s weird the obsession, you know, I’m not one to like the obsession whether it’s good or bad.’
