Just weeks ago, President Trump was enthusiastically praising his new Air Force One-style aircraft, describing it as the “best plane ever built” and saying the Qataris, who provided the jet, had made it “appropriate for a President.”
“We are very proud of the plane … the country’s very proud of it,” Trump said at the time, presenting the aircraft as a source of national pride.
But Trump has now shifted his tone, acknowledging that the jet still requires security upgrades. He said the aircraft has been temporarily pulled from service so it can be “maxed out,” including the possibility of adding stronger defensive systems to bring it closer in line with the protected government planes used for official travel.
Questions about the president’s choice of aircraft followed him back to Washington after he returned from New Jersey, where he had attended the World Cup final.
The jet at the center of the scrutiny is a luxury Boeing 747-800 that was given to Trump as a gift. He has previously said he plans to keep the aircraft after leaving office and feature it as part of his presidential library.
Concerns over the Qatari-donated plane’s security features became a focus during a motorcade movement.
Pointing toward the aircraft’s body, a reporter traveling with the small press pool pressed the commander-in-chief over whether the plane lacked the kind of military-grade protections normally associated with presidential air travel.
“Mr. President, this plane does not have anti-missile defense systems on it. Why are you flying it?” the journalist asked.

Trump quickly brushed off the safety anxieties, maintaining that the aircraft is already highly capable and scheduled for imminent upgrades.
‘Well, it has… it has a lot of capability, but as I understand it, in about a month or so, they’re going to send it to have it be maxed out. So they’re going to be sending it, and they’ll have it be maxed out,’ Trump replied.
Trump said the upgrades should take roughly a month – but did not specify which upgrades would be taking place.
Trump flew aboard this newly minted, red-white-and-blue-liveried aircraft to Ankara, Turkey, for the NATO summit in the first week of July. It marked the plane’s very first international presidential voyage.
Security concerns regarding the plane intensified during the trip.
Trump unexpectedly departed Turkey not on the new Qatari-gifted jet, but on the older, traditional baby-blue Air Force One aircraft. Meanwhile, the new Qatari jet was flown ahead to a British base without him on board.
Trump explained the logistics on Truth Social and to reporters as a gesture of military appreciation rather than a security emergency.
‘To honor our brave men and women of the Military, we are sending the brand new, and truly spectacular, Air Force One to Mildenhall Air Force Base, in the United Kingdom, to give them a chance to tour the Aircraft… For old time’s sake, we’ll be taking the former Air Force One, from Turkey to Mildenhall!’
When pressed by reporters in Ankara about whether he was swapping planes out of fear of Iran, Trump dodged a direct answer but quipped, ‘I’m number one on the kill list for Iran… I don’t know. I can’t tell you that but I don’t really care.’

The New York Times initially reported that new jet is missing the vital defensive countermeasures equipped on older models, leaving it completely without antimissile capabilities.
In an aggressive escalation just one day after a story originally appeared about the lack of these capabilities, FBI agents descended on the Times reporters, delivering them subpoenas to testify before a federal grand jury.
The current Air Force One fleet, which consists of heavily modified Boeing 747-200s, has been in service since 1990 and is rapidly aging.

‘Frankly, we couldn’t build a plane like this because we wouldn’t be willing to spend the kind of money necessary. They spent top dollars,’ Trump said of the Qataris.
