Poundland has sold 40,000 engagement rings ahead of Valentine’s Day

Poundland has sold almost £40,000 engagement rings ahead of Valentine’s Day, the retailer has announced.

This is almost double the number they sold last year, the discounter told the BBC.

The discount store offers a range of £1 ‘Bling Rings’ as well as £1 ‘Man Bands’ which are designed to be used as placeholders until a ‘proper ring’ comes along, and are available across the UK.

But while many may be pleased to be asked for their hand in marriage this Valentine’s Day, Twitter users were left unimpressed at the thought of the budget ring.

Writing on the social media platform this morning, one person said: ‘Little tip: if you propose to me with a £1 engagement ring things will not go well for you.

Getting creative, one singleton joked: ‘Roses are red, Violets are blue, Here’s a poundland engagement ring. Just for you.

A third added: ‘No no no. I don’t care how broke you are, I would prefer you steal then get me a ring from Poundland.

While others were more encouraging about the thought of the budget sparklers.

‘If you fancy me, tell me. Then I can get you a £1 engagement ring from Poundland’ said one.

Another added: ‘Nothing says ‘I Love You’ quite like a Poundland engagement ring…’

A third wrote: ‘My sister got a plastic ring for her boyfriend from Poundland that says “since he hasn’t yet” and honestly her power is immeasurable.’

Poundland’s Valentine’s range is its biggest yet, with more than 80 products on sale including ‘adults only’ cards and fragrances.

Earlier this year, the high street retailer released an ‘ask him ring’ to encourage women to propose this leap year.

The ‘man band’ was the budget retailer’s first foray into men’s engagement rings.

Announcing the release, Poundland cheekily suggested it wanted to encourage women to pop the question on February 29 ‘because he might never get around to doing it’.

The ring comes in four styles and finger sizes and is presented in a sumptuous navy velvet presentation box – meaning a loved one might not ever notice that’s its not designer.
