Former All-Pro running back for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Doug Martin, passed away this weekend, as announced by his family on Sunday.

Martin was 36 years old.

“With deep sorrow, we announce that Doug Martin passed away on Saturday morning,” the family shared in a statement to the Tampa Bay Times. “The cause of death remains unconfirmed. We ask for privacy during this difficult time.”

Martin first gained attention at Boise State University, where his impressive strength packed into a 5-foot-9 stature earned him the nickname “Muscle Hamster.” Boise State Football honored Martin, highlighting his tenure from 2007 to 2011, as one of the most outstanding running backs in their history. During his time there, he was a two-time first team all-conference selection and ranked in the top 10 for several records, including career rushing yards, yards per carry, and rushing touchdowns.

Following his college career, Martin was selected by the Buccaneers in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft. He made a significant impact in his rookie year, achieving 1,454 rushing yards, 11 touchdowns, and 472 receiving yards.

In 2015, Martin had an exceptional season, earning All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors, with ESPN noting it as his finest year. That season, Martin rushed for 1,402 yards and six touchdowns.

The Buccaneers mourned the fallen player, who became a “fan favorite” during his tenure.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of Doug Martin,” the Buccaneers said in a social media post. “From his record-setting rookie season in 2012 to his multiple Pro Bowl selections during his six seasons as a Buccaneer, Doug made a lasting impact on our franchise.”

He was also “honored as one of the Top 50 Buccaneers of all time for his numerous achievements” for the team’s 50th anniversary, the Bucs said. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and everyone whom Doug touched throughout his life.”

Martin played six seasons total with the Buccaneers and one with the Oakland Raiders (now the Las Vegas Raiders) before retiring in 2018, having struggled with several injuries over those years. In 2016 he was suspended for four games for violating the NFL’s substance use policy and entered treatment rather than appeal.

“The NFL family mourns the loss of Doug Martin,” the pro football league said in a social media post on Sunday. “We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and teammates.”
