Prince William shares a laugh and a cup of tea with care home residents as he opens a new facility at The Isles of Scilly Hospital

Today, Prince William opted for a scenic boat ride as he set off for a series of appearances in the picturesque Isles of Scilly.

Known locally as the Duke of Cornwall, he touched down at Hughtown’s harbor on St Mary’s, the largest isle of this beautiful archipelago situated 28 miles from Cornwall. His arrival was aboard the new pilot boat, John Guy, a tribute to a devoted Duchy worker originally from Scilly.

The newly commissioned vessel, backed by the Duchy of Cornwall, is designed to enhance maritime safety within the island waters, particularly assisting in navigating substantial ships.

As news of his visit spread, a throng of enthusiastic visitors assembled at the quayside, eager to catch a glimpse of the royal figure.

William’s primary purpose for the visit was to inaugurate a new unit at the Isles of Scilly Hospital. During his time there, he engaged with staff and patients, sharing warm moments over tea with residents of a nearby care home.

Since assuming responsibility for the Duchy as Prince of Wales, William has shown a vested interest in advancing healthcare services on Scilly, aiming to enhance the islands’ medical facilities.

The redevelopment brings together NHS services and social care in a more joined-up model, making better use of staff, sharing resources more effectively and improving continuity of care, particularly for older residents.

This integrated approach is especially important in a remote island setting, they say, where workforce and housing pressures remain ongoing challenges.

Following this, William will see the nearly complete construction site of ten new sustainable homes being delivered by the Duchy.

The development has been designed to help tackle the Isles’ acute housing shortage, with homes prioritised for those who have lived on the Isles of Scilly for more than five years, or who currently work on the islands.

Once complete, the homes will feature high levels of insulation, positive ventilation throughout and rooftop solar panels.

Each property will also include a dedicated parking space for the island car-share scheme, with provision for electric vehicle charging points.

The homes are expected to welcome their first residents in winter 2026.

Following Storm Goretti in January 2026, the Isles of Scilly experienced significant loss to its shelterbelt trees, which play a vital role in protecting communities from high winds and storms.

The Duchy of Cornwall supported the community’s recovery, providing additional resources, organising essential repairs and commissioning expert assessments from surveyors and forestry specialists.

During his visit, William will meet local emergency responders and replant a shelterbelt tree, reflecting the islands’ recovery, resilience and long-term renewal.
