In a memorable moment from a widely-discussed interview, Sarah Ferguson, the former Duchess of York, revealed a unique organizational habit to Ruby Wax. Ferguson, who has often described herself as a “practical person,” shared this tidbit during a BAFTA-nominated episode of Wax’s BBC One show, “When Ruby Wax Meets….”
The interview took place in Ferguson’s rented home in Surrey, following her divorce from Prince Andrew. At the time, the Yorks were reportedly in the midst of moving out of Royal Lodge, adding another layer of transition to Ferguson’s life.
One of the standout moments from their conversation was when Ruby Wax, who has since transitioned from her career in showbiz to become a mental health advocate and coach, decided to explore Ferguson’s drawers. There, she discovered an array of Post-It stickers, each labeling the contents in an unusual fashion.
The labels, which humorously categorized t-shirts by color, such as “smart pink” and “smart white,” particularly amused the comedian. Ruby’s curiosity led her to question Ferguson about the system, asking if the labels were a result of laziness in checking drawer contents.
Ferguson explained that these labels were a time-saving measure, particularly useful when preparing her daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, for school. The practical approach, she insisted, was simply a way to streamline their morning routine.
When Ruby asked Fergie whether she was ‘too lazy’ to check what was in each drawer, the mother of two said the labels helped her save time while getting her daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, ready for school.
‘You’re winding me up Ruby,’ Fergie, dressed in a black turtleneck and purple skirt, said.
‘When you’re getting dressed in the morning and you’ve got about five seconds to get the children breakfast before you burn the toast, I’m not going to open 50 million drawers to find my grey t-shirts.
Sarah Ferguson once described herself as a ‘practical person’ when Ruby Wax discovered her strange organisational habit during their now-famous interview
‘So I labelled them all up, I’m a practical person.’
Fergie, seemingly distracted, then placed a photograph of the late Queen Elizabeth II face down on the dresser after the camera panned to it, as Ruby quipped: ‘She keeps hiding those.’
‘It’s private!’ Fergie replied, as Ruby lightheartedly added, ‘I’m going to be beheaded.’
The American-British star, who shot to fame in the early 90s for her irreverent interviews with some of the world’s most famous people, received a BAFTA nomination for the interview that drew 14 million viewers.
Ruby was a close friend of the late Princess of Wales after they crossed paths at a charity gala in 1993 and then at the gym.
Famously secretive of their friendship, Ruby has previously criticised the way Princess Diana’s friends have disclosed details about her personal life as a ‘revolting’ way to gain fame.
When she interviewed Fergie, Ruby was at the height of her stardom while the former Duchess of York had effectively been ‘banished from Balmoral’ after her divorce from Andrew in April 1996.
Tearfully, she allegedly recounted to Ruby how her young daughters asked her ‘why aren’t you good enough to go up’ to the Royal Family’s Scottish residence.
One of the show’s most memorable moments came when Ruby, who has since quit showbiz and rebuilt herself as a mental health coach and advocate, decided to rifle through her drawers that were all bizarrely labelled with unsightly Post-It stickers
Fergie’s marriage to Andrew is said to have ‘crumbled’ after the birth of her second child, while she also had a secret affair with American businessman Steve Wyatt during her pregnancy with Eugenie.
The revelations were exposed in Andrew Lownie’s bombshell biography about Andrew – Entitled.
He wrote how Fergie was dubbed ‘Her Royal Excess’ due to her frivolous and impulsive spending habits.
During her marriage, she is said to have spent wildly on staff, holidays, parties and flowers – with no regard for settling bills.
She reportedly racked up debts in excess of £3.7million by 1994 and became well-known for running up huge bills in stores such as Harrods without paying.
In September, the ex-Duchess found herself involved in what could be her most damaging scandal to date after a newly uncovered email from 2011 revealed that she had apologised to paedophile Jeffrey Epstein less than two months after telling journalists: ‘I will never have anything to do with (Epstein) again.’
Since the revelation, exposed by The Mail on Sunday, was made public, seven charities have dropped her as a patron.
Other charities are reportedly reviewing their positions following the publication of her grovelling messages to the notorious sex predator whom she referred to her as a ‘supreme friend’.
It comes after the Daily Mail reported that Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie have jetted out of the country as their parents reportedly prepare to move out of the Royal Lodge
But Fergie, who wed Andrew at Westminster Abbey in 1986, is no stranger to a scandal, with Lownie describing her as being ‘receptive to falling in love’ during her marriage.
In addition to her alleged affair with Wyatt, Fergie sent shockwaves around the world when paparazzi photos of her having her toes sucked by the financial adviser were published in 1992.
During her interview with Ruby, Fergie reflected on the controversies that marked her time as a member of the Firm, adding: ‘I am so sad, I am just miserable about what happened in the past, but then I can’t look back.
‘I look back all the time and I am miserable when I do, but I have to look forward now.
‘But if you say: “Gosh, you could have had such a really fantastic life…well, yes, I blew it.’

Both Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson gave up their titles of Duke and Duchess of York earlier this month amid fresh scrutiny over their links to paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.
The pair have been living separate lives under one roof at Royal Lodge, being able to ‘live at a certain level’ while riding out multiple scandals from the comfort of their 30-room Grade II listed mansion, where they have lived since 2008 despite divorcing in 1996.
However on Monday, it was reported that the prince had finally agreed to leave the residence – but has brazenly demanded that he and Fergie are given two separate royal homes in exchange.
It is understood they are willing to go their separate ways if they must leave their Windsor Estate home.
