Alejandro Garnacho and his agent brother have furiously criticised Ruben Amorim’s decision to drop him for the Europa League final, just hours after the Manchester United star took to social media with a thinly-veiled dig of his own. 

It was misery for Manchester United and jubilation for Tottenham in Bilbao on Wednesday night as Ange Postecoglou’s side narrowly triumphed 1-0 over their Premier League rivals to call an end to the club’s 17-wait for a major trophy.

Spurs winger Brennan Johnson netted the only goal of the game just before half time, after a cross ricocheted off the shoulder of Manchester United defender Luke Shaw and into the path of the Welshman for an easy tap-in.

Mason Mount was selected by the Portuguese manager in place of Garnacho, with the former Chelsea star earning just his second Europa League start of the campaign and first since facing Bodo/Glimt back in November. 

Reacting to his exclusion and Manchester United’s defeat, Garnacho’s brother and agent Roberto caused a stir by taking to social media to laugh at Amorim’s decision to bench him.

‘Working as no one else, helping every round, coming from two goals in the last two finals, just to be on the pitch for 19 mins and get thrown under the bus. Wowe hahahahahaha,’ he wrote on Instagram. 

Garnacho hinted that he too disagreed with Amorim’s decision just hours before the final, posting a memory of him scoring in the Red Devils’ FA Cup final triumph over Manchester City last season, back when Erik ten Hag was manager.

Although there was initially no clear indication that Garnacho’s post had anything to do with his omission from the Europa League final lineup, the timing certainly raised eyebrows and now appears to be connected with the furious outburst made by his brother on the social media platform.

The Argentina star later echoed his brother’s sentiments during an interview after the match, while giving an update on his Manchester United future.

‘I played every round to help the team reach the final, and today I only got 20 minutes,’ the Argentine told the media, as per AlbicelesteTalk.

‘I don’t know. I will try to enjoy the summer and then see what happens.’

As news of Amorim’s starting lineup broke before the match, Garnacho was seen cutting a dejected and frustrated figure on the pitch.

Standing alongside Tottenham defender Sergio Reguilon, who briefly spent a spell on loan at Old Trafford last season, the 20-year-old forward appeared unimpressed and unenthused before the warm-up, appearing to listen to music with one earphone in.

Garnacho, 20, and his younger brother have a history of posting petulant remarks and messages on social media when the Argentine is out of favour with the manager.

The forward found himself in hot water back in February after he posted a picture looking disappointed at being substituted during Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Ipswich Town.

The behaviour of Garnacho and his brother is believed to have raised concerns previously within Old Trafford, with the Ipswich incident leading to an apology from the player. 

Amorim also revealed after the post in February that Garnacho had offered to buy his team-mates dinner to make amends for his behaviour online.

‘He came to me,’ said the United boss at the time. ‘It was funny because the next day he came to my office. 

‘I did some investigations; he went to the dressing-room, changed his clothes because he was wet, he watched the game, not on the bench, and at the end of the game he was there and went home.

‘There’s not an issue. But I told him that at Manchester United everything is important and perception at a big club is really important. He is going to pay a dinner for all the team and that is it.

‘I think it is completely different for the players,’ Amorim continued. ‘Before it was just two newspapers and nothing more. Now there is social media, they are so focused on it. You cannot go to it without seeing news and a photo.

‘There can be a hundred things and one bad thing, and they focus on that. There can be criticism and they need help to deal with that. It is modern football.

‘I think he understands. They read everything, all the small things. I know the players quite well, I understand they are frustrated. He was subbed, he was playing well. I am just trying to help them to be better players.’

In the wake of the Red Devils’ dismal defeat in Bilbao, which leaves the club without Champions League football for next season, Amorim sensationally claimed he would leave United if the club’s board and fans want to sack him.

Manchester United sit 16th in the Premier League on a mere 39 points heading into the final weekend, and Wednesday’s dreadful Europa League final defeat has only worsened the mood around Old Trafford.

Asked what he can say to supporters to give them hope that his methods — which he is refusing to compromise on in any way — can work in the long term, he made a stunning admission on his future.

‘I have nothing to show to the fans, so in this moment it is a little bit of faith (that is required),’ he said. ‘Let’s see (on the future). Like I said before, I am always open.

‘If the board and fans feel that I am not the right guy, I will go in the next day without any conversation about compensation, but I will not quit. I am really confident on my job and as you see I will not change nothing in the way I do things.’

When asked to explain his starting XI, Amorim was unimpressed at the suggestion that he got his selection wrong by choosing Mount ahead of Garnacho in the left No 10 role.
