Arsenal will back manager Mikel Arteta in the transfer market this summer despite the club’s top-four collapse.

In the Premier League, the Gunners lost 2-0 at Newcastle United on Monday night to fall two points behind rivals Tottenham in the race to finish fourth.

After being ahead of Antonio Conte’s side for much of this season it appears Arsenal will miss out on a Champions League place and the vital revenue the competition generates.

However, according to The Telegraph, bosses at the Emirates are planning to supply Arteta with a significant sized warchest regardless of whether they clinch the top-four or not.

The club’s show of support will please Arteta who has watched his team struggle to cope with high-profile injuries in recent matches.

The loss of Thomas Partey and Kieran Tierney played a significant role in defeats against Crystal Palace, Brighton and Southampton in April.

And although Mohamed Elneny and Eddie Nketiah have done well since coming into the side, the Gunners’ last two losses to Newcastle and Tottenham have revealed both players’ limitations.

Arteta is expected to sign at least one striker in the summer with Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus heavily linked with a move to the Emirates.

Meanwhile, Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans and Wolves star Ruben Neves are also reported targets in central midfield with both set to leave when the transfer window opens.

But the north Londoners will find it hard to attract their top targets without the lure of Champions League football.

This season, Arteta has often described what a return to Europe’s top table would mean for the club and he was frustrated after their defeat at St James’s Park all but ended those hopes.

He told Sky Sports: ‘The performance was nowhere near the level if we want to play in the Champions League.

‘When you see the team we have at the moment there are a lot of question marks in a lot of different positions, because of the injuries and suspensions we had. But it is not an excuse. Today we weren’t at the races.’
