Bayern Munich have ‘strongly condemned’ racist comments that were made towards defender Dayot Upamecano on social media.

The 25-year-old was sent off and conceded a penalty for a challenge on Gustav Isaksen during the Bundesliga Champion’s 1-0 defeat by Lazio on Wednesday night.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) the club wrote: ‘FC Bayern strongly condemn the racist comments being directed towards Dayot Upamecano on social media.’

‘We’re all behind you, Upa!’

Upamecano had appeared to stretch to block a shot from Isaksen, but mistimed his challenge, standing on the Lazio forward’s foot.

Referee Francois Letexier subsequently awarded a straight red card to the France international and a penalty against Bayern Munich for the foul.

Ciro Immobile subsequently stepped up to score the winning goal from the spot which would ultimately seal the victory for the Serie A side.

It means Bayern will need to score twice in order to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League in the second leg of this tie at the Allianz Arena in March.

They will also be without Upamecano, who’s sending off means he’ll now be suspended for the next leg.

He has been a pivotal figure in Bayern’s backline this season, having started in 16 of their Bundesliga matches so far this season.

Thomas Tuchel’s side are next in action against VFL Bochum on Sunday and will be hoping to turn things around after having now suffered two consecutive defeats, with the Bundesliga champions suffering a 3-0 defeat by league leaders Bayer Leverkusen at the weekend.
