The Canada men’s national team have punched their ticket to this summer’s Copa America following their 2-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago in the Nations League play-in final.

It was a hard-fought win in the end for the Canadians who will now take part in one of the most prestigious international tournaments for the first time ever. Goals from Cyle Larin and Jacob Shaffelburg sealed the triumph for Canada, as they’re now set to take on the likes of Argentina, Chile and Peru in Group A of the competition.

“I’m super happy for the win and to be able to qualify,” Canada interim head coach Mauro Biello said. “We knew it was going to be a difficult game, we knew the type of game this was going to be. [Trinidad and Tobago is] a team that’s very physical, closes spaces, doesn’t give you much sitting in a low block and trying to hit us with the counter. I think what I was most proud of was the players, their mentality, because it’s easy to get frustrated in games like this.”

Biello acknowledge how important it is for Canada to take part in the Copa America tournament given the amount of attention it will receive and the sheer quality that will be on display all summer long from the likes of Lionel Messi to Vinicius Junior.

“Outside of the, the World Cup, it’s a very prestigious tournament, Copa America. We’re going to really feel the passion of this type of tournament, and what it brings and what it means for those countries.

“To be part of that is amazing for soccer people, it’s amazing to live those types of feelings and emotions and play in those types of games. We have the chance to play against the world champions, it’s a dream,” he said.

It’s been a rough few months in the Canadian setup filled with a bit of turmoil. Head coach John Herdman stepped down from the international stage to take the touchline for MLS outfit Toronto FC while many wondered if Les Rouges would qualify for the competition after their semi-final shortcomings against Jamaica.

But Canada’s qualification gives something for their fans to be excited about as they just might be a dark horse side with players like Alphonso Davies, Jonathan David and Tajon Buchanan in the squad.

“I’m super happy for for all our fans, I think that’s the first and foremost. What this means to all our fans is huge to be able to be in a Copa America, to play against the world champions. I think this is what all soccer fans, the sports fans in this country, want to see, and I’m super happy.”

Canada will make their Copa America debut against the current holders and World Cup winners Argentina on June 20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
