Charlotte FC have seen one defender join the club while another has departed for Europe, making needed changed to the backline for first-year head coach Dean Smith. Nashville SC have also brought in a defender to GEODIS Park, dipping into the free-agent market to bring depth to the center-back position.

Charlotte FC have added to their backline with the addition of center-back Djibril Diani from French side SM Caen. The former Grasshopper player joins the Eastern Conference club on a deal through the 2025 season with an option for 2026.

“Djibril is a versatile, left-footed midfielder who can also operate as a left-sided center back. He’s a tidy, technical player with a rare athletic profile which suits the characteristics we’re looking for in those roles,” Charlotte general manager Zoran Krneta said in a release.

“This was a great opportunity in the market to acquire a player who we have been looking at for some time and Djibril is a great complement to the roster options we currently have in the squad.”

Center-back Guzman Corujo has signed for Serbian outfit FK Cukaricki from Charlotte FC after managing 32 appearances for the Crown upon joining in September 2021.

“Guzman will always be a key part of our history at Charlotte FC and has been a great leader and fan favorite during his time in the Queen City. Everyone at the club wishes Guz well in the next chapter of his career,” said Krneta.

Prior to his time in MLS, Corujo registered over 100 appearances for Uruguayan side Nacional.

Nashville SC have signed veteran center-back Brent Kallman on a free transfer from Minnesota United.

The 33-year-old managed over 150 appearances for the Loons, scoring eight times for the Western Conference team.

“Brent brings a veteran presence as an outstanding one-v-one defender in the air and on the ground,” Nashville general manager Mike Jacobs said in a statement.

“He has settled into our group on and off the field in preseason, and we feel fortunate to be able to add him into our club.”
