Cristian Romero is ‘capable of ruining Tottenham’s season’ following his horror performance against Chelsea on Monday night, according to an ex-Blues star.

The Argentine was dismissed in the 33rd minute of Spurs’ 4-1 defeat to their London rivals after a high challenge on his compatriot Enzo Fernandez.

Some suggested that Romero was lucky to escape a red card just moments before, after he kicked out at Chelsea defender Levi Colwill.

And, in the wake of the result, one former Chelsea star has suggested that the defender is a liability and could cost Ange Postecoglou’s side in the long run.

Speaking on talkSPORT, former Chelsea midfielder Andy Townsend said: ‘In regards to Romero, I’m sure they love him. All the fans love a cult-hero type of player…’

His co-host Ally McCoist then intervenes to suggest: ‘I think he let his team down Andy!’

Townsend responded: ‘He’s capable of ruining a season, if you’re not careful. He’s been playing outstandingly well, with Van de Ven, but he’s just got that thing in him where he can just go, in a split second’.

Townsend, who made 110 appearances for Chelsea between 1990-93, remained adamant that the Argentine had proved far too costly for Spurs on the night.

Romero came under fire from a number of prominent pundits and analysts following the rash challenge which put Spurs on the back-foot from the off.

Reflecting on the incident during Sky Sports’ live coverage, Gary Neville said: ‘That is a penalty. He plays the ball but no idea why he follows through like he does. Mad challenge.

‘He doesn’t have to put his studs into Fernandez’ shin. In trouble with fact that it’s high. If you go back to Curtis Jones a few weeks ago that I thought was harsh, this one is a lot worse. Trust me as a defender that is not a natural follow-through.

‘Definite penalty but it’s whether it is a red. It’s red. He could have gone earlier, no sympathy for him, he makes wild challenges, passionate and fiery but he knows what he is doing and it’s the wildest of challenges. Tottenham fans are going crazy.’

At the time of Romero’s dismissal, Tottenham were 1-0 up but quickly saw that lead slip away as the Blues overturned the early set-back to triumph 4-1.

To make matters worse for the hosts, full-back Destiny Udogie was also dismissed in the second-half after a second bookable offence.

Spurs fans will be further disheartened by the injuries sustained by Micky van de Ven and James Maddison during the scintillating first-half.

The result was Tottenham’s first defeat of the league season however they still set second in the Premier League table.
