Dominic Calvert-Lewin has held fresh talks with Newcastle, talkSPORT understands.

Calvert-Lewin is available on a free transfer after leaving Everton and Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is a long-term admirer.

Having secured a spot in next season’s Champions League, the Magpies initially considered signing Calvert-Lewin last summer but opted out due to the high price tag.

However, Newcastle aren’t the only clubs who are in contention for Calvert-Lewin’s signature.

talkSPORT understands the 28-year-old is on Manchester United’s list of options this summer for attacking reinforcements.

The Red Devils, searching for more attacking options, are now shifting their focus after accepting Arsenal’s lead in acquiring Sporting’s striker Viktor Gyokeres.

Calvert-Lewin was also a target for newly-promoted Leeds United.

However, the Yorkshire outfit were unable to match the 28-year-old’s wage demands.

Should Howe secure Calvert-Lewin, he would provide competition for superstar striker Alexander Isak.

Callum Wilson had previously acted in the support role for Isak, who scored a staggering 44 league goals across the last two seasons.

Although Wilson was in talks to extend his stay, he has since announced his departure from the club after his contract expired.

Despite the challenge Calvert-Lewin would face in overtaking Isak for a starting position, former Premier League manager Alan Pardew maintained that the former Everton star has much to contribute.

But key to any deal would be stipulations around his playing time given he missed 15 games last season with injury.

“If you were going to do a contract with him, you’d certainly have something in place that he’d have to hit a certain amount of appearances for him to reach a certain financial level,” Pardew said on talkSPORT’s Final Word.

“So if that was in place, I would be quite comfortable with him being in the squad because he’s got talent, I think we all know that.

“When he is on his game, he’s as good as any striker in the Premier League.”

So highly rated is Calvert-Lewin by Pardew, he even likened the striker’s ability to that of Gyokeres, who slammed home a whopping 54 goals in 52 games last term.

“Actually, on their day, there’s not much between them,” Pardew said.

“If Calvert-Lewin has a day and Gyokeres has a day, they’re very similar.

“But of course, the consistency level of Calvert-Lewin and the fact he’s not really on the pitch that often is the big, big problem with him.”

Calvert-Lewin joined Everton in 2016 from his boyhood club Sheffield United for a reported £1.5million fee.

Across 273 appearances in all competitions, he reached 71 goals and 22 assists for the Toffees.

He netted 16 goals in their 2020/21 league campaign and was named as the club’s Player of the Season.

Calvert-Lewin ranks third in Everton’s all-time Premier League scoring charts behind legend Duncan Ferguson and leader Romelu Lukaku.
