Evidence has shown us that the worst time to face Bayern Munich this season is directly after a defeat.

Embarrassed at the weekend in a 5-1 mauling at the hands of Eintracht Frankfurt, Thomas Tuchel’s side are now eagerly awaiting the chance to put things right.

Their next match? That would be Manchester United. Erik ten Hag’s ailing side cannot catch a break.

Tuchel’s side started the season losing the German Super Cup to RB Leipzig, going down 3-0. What followed was an emphatic 4-0 drubbing of Werder Bremen and normal service resumed.

Bayern would find themselves humbled again almost three months later when they were knocked out of the German Cup by third division Saarbrucken.

BAYERN MUNICH’S BOUNCEBACK ABILITY

Aug 12Lost German Supercup 3-0 to RB Leipzig

Aug 18 – Beat Werder Bremen 4-0 away in the league

Nov 1Lost 2-1 away to Saarbrucken in German cup

Nov 4 – Beat Borussia Dortmund 4-0 away in the league

Dec 9Lost 5-1 away to Eintracht Frankfurt in the league

That stunning loss made it the third time the German champions had been dumped out in the second round of the domestic cup.

But, not to worry, Bayern were right back on the horse with a 4-0 execution of rivals Borussia Dortmund in the very next match, with Harry Kane scoring a hat-trick in his first Der Klassiker experience.

And so Manchester United would be forgiven for harbouring trepidaton at taking on Bayern in a must-win Champions League game this week on the back of their undressing against Frankfurt.

Tuchel has already warned United that Kane is ‘looking forward to’ their upcoming Champions League clash at Old Trafford.

‘I have confidence in my team,’ Tuchel added to SPORT1.

‘There’s no point in badmouthing everything now. It continues on Tuesday. Old Trafford. We need a reaction.’

Midfielder Leon Goretzka shares the hunger of his manager to show a response immediately, speaking to Bayern’s insatiable appetite for winning.

‘That’s the beauty of football. Things go quickly,’ Goretzka told Sport Studio.

‘For us on Tuesday it’s about showing a reaction. That’s our focus now.

‘Now it’s time to regenerate for two days and show a different face on Tuesday and gain self-confidence.’

Bayern Munich have already qualified for the knockout stages of the Champions League as group winners, but Manchester United must win and hope the other Group A match, between FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray ends in a draw.

That possibility is very remote and so United winning may not even be enough.

Since 2003 there has only been eight cases of two teams facing off against each other on Matchday 6 while level on points.

From those eight matches there has been just one draw out – the result United need to see in Denmark
