Frank Lampard wasted no time in dispelling the debate over who was the best out of him, Steven Gerrard and Paul Scholes, with the Chelsea legend describing the discussion as ‘useless’.

The 45-year-old starred as part of England’s co-called ‘Golden Generation’ but struggled to gel with Gerrard and Scholes as part of a Three Lions midfield.

Scholes eventually retired from England duty at the young age of 29 after being shifted wide to accommodate for Gerrard and Lampard in the heart of midfield and the debate over who was the best player has gone on ever since.

Now, the former Chelsea and Everton manager has offered his view on the debate and credited his opposition for being ‘incredible players’.

‘It’s a debate that I get when I get in a cab in London. I get it all the time. Listen I am going to sit on the fence here. It’s not a debate that’s worthy of anything,’ Lampard told the Obi One podcast.

‘I played with and against both with England. They were incredible players and we had different attributes and were in different circumstances.

‘I have the upmost respect for those players. If someone went to me “Frank here is the debate, I think Stevie [Gerrard] is better than you” he was amazing and I’ll agree with you.

‘It’s no big deal and I am pleased to be in debate of that level with players. I know what my strengths were and what they did and I think it’s a useless debate.’

Lampard’s modesty credits the achievements of both Scholes and Gerrard. but is a different view to that offered up by the former Man United midfielder who was recently asked for his opinion.

Scholes tributed Gerrard for single-handedly helping Liverpool become successful, stating: ‘I wouldn’t be able to do what he did at Liverpool.

‘Whether he could’ve done it at United, I don’t know. I don’t see why not. But I couldn’t have done what he did at Liverpool, no.’
