As the year draws to a close, Matildas captain Sam Kerr is preparing to end it on a high note, with fresh details emerging about her upcoming New Year’s Eve wedding to fiancée Kristie Mewis in Perth.
The dynamic couple, who welcomed their son Jagger earlier this year, will celebrate their nuptials in Kerr’s hometown as 2025 concludes. Fans have already dubbed the event Australia’s equivalent of a royal wedding.
Although the specific location of the ceremony remains a well-guarded secret, Mewis has revealed that the wedding will take place at a private residence in Perth, which she describes as ‘beautiful’ following significant renovations.
The ceremony is expected to host over 100 guests, a prospect that has begun to cause some jitters for the American soccer star.
“Obviously, it is a lot of people. I know others have much larger weddings, but that’s still a significant number,” Mewis, 34, admitted.

The couple have revealed that they will both wear suits during their special ceremony in Perth
“The thought of interacting with 120 people in a single evening is overwhelming. My main concern is not being able to spend enough time with each guest, and that’s what I’m anxious about right now,” she added.
One of the most touching details revealed so far is the role their seven-month-old son Jagger will play on the day. Although too young to officially take part in the ceremony, Kerr will walk down the aisle holding him, a moment Mewis admits will be overwhelming.
‘I feel like he’s a little bit too young to have a role but Sam is going to walk with him down the aisle which is very, very sweet,’ she said.
‘That is going to be gut-wrenching for me, I will sob when that happens.
‘He’s probably going to be wearing a little matching outfit with her, it’s going to be absolutely adorable so he’s just chilling for the ceremony.’
Mewis also revealed that both brides will be wearing matching suits, with Jagger dressed in a miniature version to complete the family look.
The only major concern ahead of the big day is the West Australian summer heat, with the wedding set to take place at the height of Perth’s hottest season.
‘It is going to be a very hot Australian summer,’ Mewis said.
Seven-month-old baby Jagger will also play a key role in the ceremony for his mothers
The couple have been an item since they were first spotted together in 2021 at the Tokyo OIympics
‘Like a 95 (Fahrenheit, 35 degrees) isn’t 87 Boston.’
Kerr and Mewis first met as international opponents, facing off regularly while representing Australia and the United States, before their relationship quietly began in 2019.
Public interest intensified during the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, when their post-match interactions drew attention, later confirming them as one of the most high-profile couples in women’s football.
Their journey together has not been without challenges. Long-distance separations became routine after Kerr moved to Chelsea in England, while Mewis continued her career across the US and Europe.
Injuries disrupted Mewis’ playing career as Kerr reached new professional heights, and in early 2023 Kerr faced a high-profile court case in the UK following an incident with police. She was ultimately found not guilty.
Throughout the legal proceedings and Kerr’s recovery from a serious ACL injury, Mewis remained by her side, largely staying out of the spotlight.
The couple later announced they were expecting a child, welcoming Jagger in 2024 as Kerr continued her rehabilitation.
