Joe Scally has been tipped to join Christian Pulisic and Yunus Musah at AC Milan in January after impressing for Borussia Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga.

The 20-year-old full-back scored his first goal of the season to rescue a point for ‘Die Fohlen’ (The Foals) in a 2-2 draw against Mainz on Friday. He went past one defender and let fly with a fierce shot from distance that sent the ball inside the far post in the 88th minute.

‘I knew I was shooting it no matter what, when I got it,’ Scally said. ‘But when I saw the goalie touch it with his hand, I thought it went over the net, but yeah, it’s a nice goal.’

Meanwhile, Pulisic and Musah have enjoyed a positive start in Serie A, with Milan sitting second in league standings despite being level on points (18) with leaders, and arch rivals, Inter. The Rossoneri are looking to strengthen in defence and have earmarked Scally, who can play on either side, as a winter target, according to Calcio Mercato.

Joe Scally scored his first goal of the season on Friday, as he’s rumored to move to Milan in Jan.

Davide Calabria, Alessandro Florenzi, or Theo Hernandez normally start at right-back and left-back for Milan, but there is a lack of cover for both positions, as center-backs Pierre Kalulu and Malick Thiaw have often been playing at full-back this season.

If Scally ends up moving to Milan in January, then he could end up playing on the same wing as Pulisic, who can either play on the left or right, for both club and country.

Kiliann Sildillia – a French right-back born in 2002 and who plays for Freiburg – is also on Milan’s radar as an alternative to Scally if a move from Monchengladbach doesn’t work out, Calcio Mercato further reported.

It seems like for now, Scally is happy with saving his current team from yet another home defeat.

‘It was a difficult game for us,’ said the New York native after Friday’s match. ‘We of course wanted to win, but to get the 2-2 at the end was very important. For me, I’m very happy to get my first goal this season.’

Scally joined Gladbach in 2019 from New York City FC, where he developed as a teen from 2015-2018.

He was named to the squad of the U.S. men’s national team for the first time in November 2021, ahead of their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Mexico and Jamaica.

Scally made his senior debut for the Star and Stripes in a 3-0 win against Morocco in June 2022. He’s gone on to make five more appearances for the U.S. and is part of Gregg Berhalter’s roster for games against Ghana and Germany this month.
