Jose Mourinho is considering his options after being sacked as manager of Roma on Tuesday, 90min understands.

The Giallorossi announced Mourinho’s departure after a poor run of form saw them drop to ninth in the Serie A table, bringing an end to his two-and-a-half year spell at the Stadio Olimpico. Mourinho’s contract at Roma was set to expire in the summer and he publicly revealed his desire to stay at the club.

Sources have told 90min that Mourinho does not currently have any plans lined up at this stage, with the decision to end his reign in the Italian capital very much of Roma’s doing. However, he will not be short of offers.

Mourinho has recently been linked with a return to the Premier League with former side Chelsea as well as Newcastle United, but 90min understands any imminent moves to those clubs would be highly surprising and nothing is concrete at this stage.

Chelsea’s ownership want to be patient with current head coach Mauricio Pochettino despite their indifferent start to the season. They are hoping to judge him in the summer at the earliest if they possibly can – the Argentine has been questioned by the fanbase already and they could be eliminated by Championship outfit Middlesbrough in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

Newcastle, meanwhile, similarly want to give more time to under-pressure boss Eddie Howe, who has had to wrestle with an extensive injury list this season.

Mourinho revealed in recent months that he would consider managing in Saudi Arabia one day, and 90min understands he would almost certainly receive a contract offer from the Saudi Pro League by the summer if he is still out of work.

Al Hilal previously made Mourinho close to a £30m-a-year offer to manage the club, but they are now top of the table and challenging for another Asian Champions League title so are unlikely to change manager in the near future.

However, Al Ahli and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr could yet look to hire Mourinho having both previously considered him for managerial positions.

There is also the possibility that Mourinho turns to international management, with several vacancies expected to arise later this summer following Euro 2024 and the Copa America ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Mourinho is understood to be open to taking the England job should Gareth Southgate leave after the Euros, although the current Three Lions boss has said he would like to stay on.
