Lee Carsley insisted that England’s Under 21s must continue pouring forward despite that style contributing to a shock qualifying defeat last night.

Charlie Cresswell’s 89th-minute header appeared to have secured a point for the European champions against Ukraine, only for Illia Kvasnytsia to strike five minutes later as Carsley’s side went in search of a winner.

The 3-2 defeat is England’s first away from home at this level in 12 years and leaves Ukraine three points clear at the top of Group F.

‘The style has to reflect what we’re trying to do. Unfortunately with that you do get counter attacked. I wanted us to try for a third.

‘This could potentially be a really good lesson for us to help the group. We spoke about how to respond when you have setbacks.’

Noni Madueke scored England’s first after defensive blunders had gifted Ukraine a two-goal lead, the second when goalkeeper James Trafford misjudged a free-kick.

Carsley added: ‘We dominated. They had four shots and scored three. They’re not great goals to concede. All of them can be stopped.’
