Liverpool are still monitoring Chelsea defender Levi Colwill even though he signed a new contract running until 2029 at Stamford Bridge last summer, 90min understands.

Colwill was courted by Liverpool upon returning to Chelsea following a successful loan spell at Brighton & Hove Albion during the 2022/23 season, helping the Seagulls to a club record-high sixth-placed Premier League finish.

Despite interest from Liverpool and Brighton over a permanent deal, Colwill put pen to paper on a new six-year contract with the option for a further year at Chelsea in August.

Sources have told 90min that the Reds remain huge admirers of Colwill and will continue to watch him closely in case a potential exit route from Chelsea materialises.

Liverpool have long been keen on Colwill since his days on loan at Huddersfield Town, but Chelsea are absolutely not interested in selling the 20-year-old, seeing him as a potential future captain – he skippered the team in their 2-1 loss at Manchester United last month.

Chelsea won’t even put a valuation on Colwill if a suitor comes calling and he is not a player the club consider for sale, regardless of whether outgoings are deemed financially necessary in 2024.

However, a sticking point this season for many Chelsea fans has been Colwill’s role in the backline, making 16 appearances in an unfavoured left-back position.

If Colwill continues in this spot in the long-term, there could be a push from the player’s side for a return to his natural position and perhaps even to leave the club in search of that opportunity. Colwill is expecting to be considered as a centre-back for England for Euro 2024 after impressing for the Young Lions in their triumphant Under-21 European Championship last summer.

Nevertheless, Chelsea’s current stance is to automatically reject any offers they receive for Colwill.

90min understands Liverpool’s summer plans could include bringing in two new centre-backs – one more established name and one player for the future. They have closely watched the performances of Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah in recent months and have had a concrete interest in the Germany international despite the Bundrsliga leaders not looking to sell.

With regards to younger options, Telleres’ Kevin Mantilla is of interest to Liverpool, with the club’s president recently revealing the Reds have been keeping tabs on the 20-year-old for several months. Facundo Gonzalez, who is currently on loan at Sampdoria from Juventus, is also being monitored, but Liverpool could look to move for him in 2025 instead.
