After Jones gave a separate interview to US broadcaster CBS, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher claimed he would rather have seen Mohamed Salah face the media following the defeat.

‘Curtis Jones is a passionate player, he’s hurting right now and given an interview that’s going to go everywhere,’ Carragher said.

‘I’d love to have seen Mo Salah speaking there, rather than Curtis Jones coming out.

Slot said: I am feeling safe, I am okay, I have got a lot of support from above. It would be nice to turn it around and get a victory of course but if you are working as a coach and not doing well then it is normal that questions are asked.

‘I am ok with my position. It is not the first time I’ve been in a difficult position but it is about time that we turned it around.’

Slot’s side, however, fell behind in the sixth minute at Anfield after Virgil van Dijk’s bizarre handball gifted the visitors a penalty.

Veteran winger Ivan Perisic converted from the spot, but Liverpool levelled 10 minutes later through Dominik Szoboszlai.

The Reds endured a nightmare second half with Guus Til restoring PSV’s lead, before substitute Couhaib Driouech scored a late double to secure a 4-1 victory for the Dutch side.

Liverpool, who have lost nine of their last 12 matches in all competitions, dropped out of the top eight in the league phase following the defeat.

The Reds will face Inter Milan, Marseille and Qarabag in their final matches of the league phase.
