Newcastle’s fixture against Burnley in the Women’s National League has been postponed this weekend following the death of Maddy Cusack.

Cusack passed away on Wednesday at the age of 27 and tributes poured in for the player, who was Sheffield United’s longest service player.

The game, along with Nottingham Forest’s match against Liverpool, also scheduled for the weekend has been rearranged for the benefit of the players involved in the game.

Both games have been re-scheduled for Sunday October 15.

The club wrote on their website: ‘It is imperative that all players and staff who knew Maddy have time to process this terrible loss. The thoughts of everyone at The FA and the FA Women’s National League are with Maddy’s friends and family at this incredibly sad time.

‘All remaining FA Women’s National League fixtures that are going ahead this Sunday will hold a minute’s silence before kick-off to honour and pay tribute to Maddy.’

Cusack, who was named vice-captain last month, had just started her sixth season with the team in the Women’s Championship. She also worked as a marketing executive at the club, who said they were ‘devastated’ by her death.

Her heartbroken brother, Richard Cusack, paid tribute on Thursday, tweeting: ‘My beautiful sister. May you rest in peace Maddy.’

Cusack joined Sheffield United halfway through their first campaign in the women’s second tier in January 2019 and last season became the first woman to reach 100 appearances for the club.

The former England youth international, who was the longest-serving player in their current squad, signed a new contract extension with the club in July.

After agreeing to extend her stay at Sheffield United, Cusack said: ‘I think everyone knows how much I love this club. This club is my home.’

Cusack last played for the Blades on August 27 in a 1-1 draw against Charlton Athletic. She did not feature for the club in their defeats to Sunderland and Blackburn Rovers or their win over Lewes earlier this month.
